Project #3: “Video Installation”
Exploring space & surface,  images in light (video projection or monitor),  sound   and viewer participation.

What is projection?
Quick impossible answer:
Projection is what makes reality surface.
( A dolphin breaching the water.)
It does so by surfacing reality.
(Asphalt or gold leaf, same difference.)

- Gary Hill

Heard by the soul, footsteps
in the mind more than shadows,
shadows of thought more than footsteps
through the path of echoes
that memory invents and erases …          Octavio Paz

Components:

Theme (body)=  Apparition

Definitions: a supernatural appearance of a person or thing; an act of appearing; an apparition of a person or thing is an immaterial appearance that seems real; an illusory appearance as in a dream; periodically visible; mirage, optical illusion, phantom, phantasm, specter, visible incorporeal spirit, poltergeist, ghost, ….  (definitions cannibalized from Random House dictionary)

Site (space)=

Consider the physical attributes and limitations of your installation space.  What can you use ?  What will you need to work around?  How will your site play a role in your installation?  Can it serve as metaphor?  Is its location, history or traditional use relevant?

What surface or objects will you project on ?  Or, how will you mount or house the portable dvd player?  How can  surface or material choices serve your idea?
What will you do with equipment, electrical cords, etc… Will they be discrete or obvious in the installation?

Audience=

How will you plan for your audience to navigate, experience and interact with the installation?

Duration/Presentation=

Your installations will be open to the public after Oct. 31.  (Viewing hours for Holy Cross rm. 11 will be determined.)  All installations should be dismantled by
November 11 (we will coordinate this with the gallery director!).

Documentation=

Use still photography and/or video to document the finished installation in situ.

Due date/critique=  Monday, October 31 with visiting artist, Krista Connerly.
