Claims 53-52 Win Over Saint Mary’s

Jenny Carlson scored 16 points as Adrian posted a 53-52 win over
Saint Mary’s Saturday afternoon in MIAA women’s basketball
action.
The win lifts the Bulldogs to 5-11 overall and 1-8 in league
contests while Saint Mary’s falls to 7-11 and 5-4 respectively.
In the opening half Adrian held the largest lead of the game
when they were up 32-9 with 3:25 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs
went into the locker room with a 32-18 lead. In the opening 20
minutes, the Belles shot 22.6 percent (7-of-31).
Saint Mary’s chipped away at their deficit and got within
48-47 on an Erin Newsom jumper with give over five minutes left
in the game. Adrian never held a lead larger than four points
down the stretch but never relinquished the lead.
The Bulldogs held a 50-47 edge when Alison Kessler brought the
Belles within 50-49 on a jumper with 2:26 left. The Bulldogs
upped their advantage to 53-49 with four straight points from
Priscilla Yeagley.
Over the next minute, Adrian missed a jumper and turned it over
on back-to-back possession as Kessler nailed three of her four
shots from the foul line to get the Belles within one at 53-52
with 38 seconds left.
Adrian turned it over on their next possession but the Belles
turned it right back to them after Nicole Tucker gave it up with
five seconds remaining. However, Yeagley missed the front end
of a one-and-one but Kessler’s three-pointer missed at
the buzzer.
Erin Newsom scored a career best 18 points to pace the Belles
while Kessler posted 13 poitns to round out the double figure
scorers for Saint Mary’s.
