Boyce Lead Saint Mary’s to Win

Alison Kessler scored 19 while Bridget Boyce chipped in 14 as
Saint Mary’s knocked off Albion 55-51 Wednesday evening
in MIAA women’s basketball action.
The win lifts the Belles to 7-10 overall and 5-3 in MIAA play
which marks the best eight-game league start ever for Saint Mary’s.
Albion falls to 12-5 and 4-4 respectively.
In a tightly contest through out, the only time their was a
double digit lead for either team was when Bridget Lipke nailed
a running jumper at the end of the first half to give the Belles
a 31-20 edge at the break.
Within the first two minutes of the second half Lipke, the MIAA
leader in assists, went down with an injury and was not able
to return the rest of the game. The Britons chipped away at their
deficit and finally got within a possession of taking the lead
at 42-39 after Megan Seely nailed a three-pointer with 9:11 left
in the game.
Albion wouldn’t hit another field for nearly five minutes
as the Belles took a 47-41 edge with 4:11 left when Seeley connected
on another shot from beyond the arc to bring the Britons within
47-44.
Saint Mary’s upped their lead to five-points on three
occasions down the stretch but couldn’t put away a pesky
Briton squad. With the score 51-48 the Belles missed a pair of
jumpers with 1:34 left however, the only possession in which
Albion had a chance to tie or take the lead late in the game
resulted in a Seely turnover.
After a Kessler baseline jumper with 33 seconds left gave the
Belles a 53-48 lead, Kellyn Glynn nailed a three-pointers with
23 seconds remaining to keep Albion in the game. However Kessler
hit a pair of free throws to seal the win.
In addition to Kessler and Boyce, Shelly Bender scored in double
figures adding 10 in the win.
Seely scored a team high 17 points for Albion while Glynn rounded
out the double digit producers for the visitors with 12.
