Mary’s Completes Tournament with Loss to Augustana, 65-61

Augustana got a 30 point effort from Kelly Sikora as they knocked
off Saint Mary’s 65-61 Friday afternoon in the fifth-place
game at the Clarke College Holiday Tournament.
The loss drops the Belles to 4-7 while Augustana improves to
6-5.
In the opening half Augustana built a 22-14 lead with just over
six minutes left in the first half. However, the Belles fought
back with a 12-4 scoring spurt the rest of the opening frame
as they two teams went to the locker rooms knotted at 26-26.
An Erin Newsom jumper to open the second half gave the Belles
their final lead of the night as Augustana slowly built their
largest lead of the game at 48-39 with 9:44 remaining. Saint
Mary’s chipped away at their deficit and a Bernadette Broderick
three-pointer with 3:41 left got the Belles to 55-53.
Saint Mary’s tied the contest at 57-57 on an Alison Kessler
lay-up with 2:27 remaining. Augustana was able to seal the game
down the stretch as they went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe
while hitting an additional field goal as Saint Mary’s
never was able to get closer than two-points the rest of the
way.
Bridge Lipke continued her stellar play with an 18 point, eight
assist, six rebound effort. Kessler was the final Belle to score
in double figures, recording 14.
The Belles return to MIAA action on Tuesday evening with they
travel to Angola, IN and face Tri-State.
