Calvin Holds Off Saint Mary’s

Saint Mary’s couldn’t overcome career highs from
three Calvin players as the Knights knocked off Saint Mary’s
67-62 Saturday afternoon in MIAA basketball action.
The win keeps #17 Calvin in a tie atop the league standings
with a 5-0 conference mark and lifts their overall record to
11-1. The Belles drop to 3-3 and 5-9 respectively.
The Knights held the largest lead of the game at 25-8 with 7:52
remaining until halftime when Saint Mary’s chipped away
and within 34-25 at intermission.
The second half proved to be a dog fight as the Belles tied
the contest at 40 on a Bridget Lipke jumper with 13:39 left in
the game. A Lipke three-pointer at the 11:20 mark gave Saint
Mary’s a 45-44 edge. However, Calvin slowly responded and
built an eight-point advantage (61-53) with 3:00 minutes left
in the contest.
Saint Mary’s wouldn’t go away and a Nicole Beier
lay-up with 41 seconds remaining brought the Belles within a
possession at 65-62. The Knights missed their field goal attempt
but grabbed the offensive rebound and sealed the win with a pair
of free throws by Marcia Harris.
Bridget Lipke posted her third career double-double as she scored
16 points while adding a career high 12 assists. Bridget Boyce
led all Belles scorers with 17 points. Alison Kessler rounded
out the double figure scorers for Saint Mary’s with 14.
Harris was one of the three Knights to post a career scoring
effort with 23. Kristi Brummel (13) and Kelly Trewhella (12)
also posted their best scoring games of their careers for Calvin.
