The Saint Mary’s
basketball team split a pair of games as they opened the season
at the Hanover College Tip-Off Classic.
On Friday evening the Belles dropped their season opener to
Hanover 68-51. The Belles held a 26-24 edge at halftime but a
strong shooting effort by the host school pushed them to victory.
After shooting just 24 percent from the floor in the opening
half, Hanover connected on 51 percent of their field goal attempts
in the second period. Bridge Boyce scored a game high 14 points
on the strength of 3-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc to lead
the Belles charge. Erin Newsom rounded out the double figure
scorers for Saint Mary’s recording 12 points in her first
collegiate contest.
On Saturday afternoon, Allison Kessler scored a team best 17
points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Belles posted a 65-61
victory over Franklin College on the second day of the two day
Tip-Off Classic.
In the opening frame the Belles jumped out to a 17-7 lead just
five-minutes into the game and never trailed the rest of the
way. Late in the second half, Franklin went on a spurt to cut
a 63-52 SMC lead with 3:17 remaining to 63-61 with 30 seconds
left in the contest. However, the Belles connected on 2-of-4
from the foul line down the stretch for the win.
In addition to Kessler’s effort, Newsom scored 14 points
while Bridget Lipke added 13 in the victory. |
