Bridget Boyce scored 15 points in her final home game as Saint
Mary’s knocked off Kalamazoo 57-54 on Senior Day Saturday
afternoon in MIAA women’s basketball action.
The win lifts the Belles record to 11-12 overall and 9-5 in league
play while Kalamazoo falls to 5-16 and 2-12 respectively.
Kalamazoo jumped out to a 16-6 lead less than eight minutes
into the contest before the Belles responded by scoring 25 of
the final 31 points of the first half. The Belles 31-22 halftime
edge came in large part to the bench scoring as the substitutes
netted 19 points in the opening frame.
The second half proved to be tight throughout. After an Alison
Kessler jumper gave the Belles their largest lead of day, 33-22,
the Hornets went on a 15-3 scoring spurt to take a one-point
lead, 37-36, with 13:50 remaining in the contest. Over the next
eight minutes neither team took a lead larger than three including
four ties during that time span.
An Erin Newsom lay-up with 4:55 remaining spark a 6-0 scoring
run as the Belles took a 55-49 advantage with 2:03 left. However,
Kalamazoo scored four consecutive points to get within 55-53
with 1:00 remaining after a Kelsea Howell jumper. After a Belles
turnover with 44 second remaining, Kalamazoo’s Mary Brown
drew a foul with 30 seconds left. Brown nailed her first but
missed the second foul shot.
Saint Mary’s couldn’t close the game out at the
foul line but did increase their lead to 57-54 with 14 seconds
left. The Hornets had a shot at the buzzer but Stephanie Anderson’s
attempt didn’t connect.
Kessler was the only other Belles player to post double figures
in scoring column with 11.
Stefanie Salasky posted a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds)
as Kalamazoo had a trio of players in double figures. Brown had
a game high 19 points while Kelsea Howell recorded 13.
