Need Late Free Throws for Win

Saint Mary’s got two free throws from Alison Kessler with
six seconds as the Belles knocked off Tri-State 58-57 Saturday
afternoon in MIAA women’s basketball action.
The wins lift the Belles record to 9-11 overall and 7-4 in league
play. The seven wins sets a school record for most MIAA wins
since joining the league during the 1997-98 season.
Tri-State came back from a 45-34 deficit with 9:21 remaining
and took their first lead of the game at 51-50 when Shanna Hoogenboom
hit a lay-up with 2:11 left in the contest. Bridget Boyce gave
the Belles the lead right back with a jumper 30 seconds later.
The Thunder scored four straight points and took a 56-52 lead
with 39 seconds left. On Saint Mary’s next possession Kessler
hit a lay-up with 30 second remaining. Dana Dunham hit one of
two from the foul line to up the Tri-State lead to 57-54. Another
Kessler lay in brought the Belles with one point at 57-56 with
11 second remaining.
On the ensuing inbounds play, Kayla Cheesman turned the ball
over which set up Kessler’s two shots from the foul line.
Hoogenboom had a 35-footer blocked out of bounds with one second
left. Tri-State could not get a shot off from the ensuing inbounds
play.
In the opening half the Belles scored the first eight points
of the game and never trailed by more than two and led by as
much as 13 points the rest of the first frame in taking a 30-21
lead at intermission.
Kessler scored a team high 18 points to pace the Belles. Shelly
Bender chipped in 11 while Boyce and Erin Newsom each scored
10 in the victory.
Cheesman led all scorers with 20 from Tri-State.
