Department of Biology

Introduction
A herbarium is a collection of plant specimens which have been preserved and labeled for scientific study. Most such specimens, especially of terrestrial plants, are pressed, dried, and mounted on standard herbarium sheets.
The Saint Mary’s College Herbarium consists primarily of specimens collected from the Bick Nature Area located adjacent to the campus in St. Joseph County, IN. The Bick Nature Area was named after George and Juanda Bick, both of whom taught in the Department of Biology. George and Juanda collected specimens to document the flora of the Nature Area, spent hours improving it for students, and created trails and brochures to help other appreciate it. The Bick Nature Area has become a frequently visited natural classroom. Its rich plant diversity has made it a unique place for environmental study.
