Deanna Gomochak

  • Major: Chemistry (B.S) and Mathematics (B.A.)
  • After Saint Mary's - Graduate School at the University of Akron in Polymer Science.
  • Honors: Deanna graduates Summa Cum Laude. She also shared the American Institute of Chemists Award. Deanna is also a member of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and Kappa Gamma Pi, the Society for Distinguished Catholic Women Graduates.
  • Departmental Service - Deanna's service to the department is in many fields. She has served as a Teaching Assistant for Organic Chemistry (Chem 221-222), as a Prep TA for Organic Chemistry(Chem 221-222), Biochemistry (Chem 323), and Principles of Chemistry (Chem 121-122). She is also the SMAACS Treasurer ('98-'99) and, as the '97-'98 Women Chemists Symposium Committee Chair, planned and executed last year's terrific event.

    Research - Deanna spent the summer of 1998 investigating the application of Controlled "Living" Radical Polymerization to the Surface Modification of Silica Gel under the direction of Dr. Harry Gibson at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA. She also spent the summer of 1997 at Ohio State University working with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

    Deanna's other activities include participating as a music minister on campus, representing the department at the Student Academic Council and playing in the Notre Dame Orchestra.


    Andrea Guyon

  • Major: Chemistry with a Biochemical Concentration (B.S.). Minor in Biology
  • After Saint Mary's - Medical School at Southern Illinois University
  • Andrea graduates Magna Cum Laude.
  • Departmental Service - Andrea been an active SMAACS member. This year she is serving as the Chair of the Special Events Committee which is planning National Chemistry Week, the Women Chemists Symposium and the Senior Awards Banquet.

    Research - Andrea spent last summer working in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kansas with Dr. Susan Lunte. Her project was titled "Determination of the Physical Effects of Electron Beaming on Glucose Oxidase."

    Andrea also serves the College outside of the department by co-chairing the Student Judicial Board.


    Rachelle Hall

  • Major: Chemistry (B.S.).
  • After Saint Mary's - A position in the chemical industry
  • Honors: Rachelle won the Mother M. Rose Elizabeth Award in Chemistry. She graduates Magna Cum Laude.
  • Departmental Service - Rachelle has served the department as a Teaching Assistant for Principles of Chemistry (Chem 121) and for Biochemistry Laboratory (Chem 323). She also served as SMAACS co-president 1997-1999.

    Research - Rachelle has worked at the NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, OH, for the two summers. Her research is titled "The Effects of Steady State Heating on the Density, Optical and Mechanical Properties of FEP." This research has been published.

    Rachelle has participated in the College Bowl. She also enjoys doing outdoor activities with her family and friends.


    Amy Hartman

  • Major: Chemistry Minor in Mathematics
  • After Saint Mary's - A position in the chemical industry
  • Honors: Amy graduates Cum Laude.
  • Departmental Service - Amy has been an active member of SMAACS, including serving as the group's secretary. Amy has also served the department as a Stockroom Assistant.

    Research - Amy spent this past summer at Loyola University in Chicago working on a project titled "Asymmetric Synthesis Via Palladium II Catalysis."

    Amy also spends time outside the department playing in the Notre Dame Marching, Concert and Varsity Bands.


    Holly Hosinski

  • Major: Chemistry (ACS certified). Math and Physics minors
  • After Saint Mary's - Holly is currently working at the Lakeland Medical Center in St.
    Joseph, MI. She is the Client Services Technician, taking phone calls and being involved in troubleshooting tests
    and results.
  • Departmental Service - Holly has been one of our hardest working Teaching Assistants. She has served as the Teaching Assistant for all the introductory classes (Chem 101, 111 and 121) and as the Prep TA for Introduction to Chemistry (Chem 101-102) and for Principles of Chemistry (Chem 121). Holly started working in the department in her first year as a Stockroom Assistant. Holly has also been a participating member of SMAACS.

    Research - Holly spent the summer of 1998 working with Dr. Marvin J. Miller at the University of Notre Dame on a project titled: "Synthesis of Novel N-Tosyloxy beta-Lactams as Potential beta-Lactamase Inhibitors"


    Molly O'Rourke

  • Major: Chemistry (B.A.).

    Laura Schreeg

  • Major: Chemistry (B.S.)
  • After Saint Mary's: Graduate School at Michigan State University
  • Honors: Laura graduates Cum Laude.
  • Departmental Service - Laura has served as a Teaching Assistant for Introduction to Chemistry (Chem 101) and Introduction to Organic and Biochemistry (Chem 124) She is currently assisting Dr. Barstis in the classroom of Principles of Chemistry (Chemistry 121) as a Teaching Assistant. Laura has also been a participating member of SMAACS.

    Research - Laura spent her summer at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center working on a project entitled "Dendroecological and Ecophysiological Analysis of Gap versus Non-gap Environments in Deciduous versus Evergreen Understories."

    Laura also participates in the Center for Social Concerns Experiential Learning Seminars and with the Students for Environmental Concerns. She also enjoys pottery, drawing, running and volleyball.


    Zhou Zhu

  • Major: Chemistry with a Biochemical Concentration (B.S.). Minors in Computer Science, Mathematics and Biology
  • After Saint Mary's: Graduate School at Harvard Medical School in Biochemistry
  • Honors: Zhou graduates Summa cum Laude. She also shared the American Institute of Chemists Award. Zhou is a member of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. She also received a Hughes Medical Foundation Fellowship.
  • Departmental Service - Zhou has served as a Grader for Principles of Chemistry (Chem 121 and 122). She has also been the prep TA for Physics (Phys 101, 102, 217, 218 and 317) as well as the prep TA for Introduction to Chemistry (Chem 101). She has been the laboratory TA for Chemistry 101. Zhou also participates as a member of SMAACS.

    Research - Zhou spent the summer of 1998 at Emory University doing research with Dr. A.E. Hodel on the Computational Analysis of Guanine-binding Surfaces on Proteins. She also worked in 1997 with Dr. J. Cowan in the Department of Chemistry at Ohio State University on a project studying the cluster assembly mechanism for high potential Iron Proteins (HiPIP).
