The Class of 2000

Julie Bauer

  • Major: Chemistry (B.S) with a Biochemical concentration
  • After Saint Mary's - Graduate School in biochemistry at the University of Illinois
  • Departmental Service - Julie has served as a Teaching Assistant in the General and Organic Chemistry laboratories as well as a classroom assistant for Chemistry 122. She has also been a prepatory TA for organic and general chemistry as well.

    Julie has been a member of SMAACS and a tutor in the department.

    Research - Julie did summer research at the University of Arkansas in Fayettvile, AR. Her work was on the contribution of Hydrogen bonding to the structure and stability of staphylococcal Nuclease.

    Julie has also been an active member of many organizations outside the department, including the Women's Choir and Collegiate Choir, Holly Cross Hall Council (Secretary) and the Residence Hall Assosiation (Service Chairwoman).


    Laura Carroll

  • Major: Chemistry (B.S) Minor in Business Administration
  • After Saint Mary's - Law School at Northwestern University
  • Laura shared the Mother M. Rose Elizabeth award in chemistry.
  • Departmental Service - Laura has been a Teaching Assistant for Chemistry 121/122 (Principles of Chemistry), Chemistry 102 and Chemistry 111 as well as prep TA for Chemistry 111 and 101. She has also worked in the stockroom, making her one of our most experienced TAs.

    Laura has also been a member of Student Affiliate of the American Chemical Society for 4 years, serving as the Service chair, a tutor, the Women Chemists sympoium co-chair and as Co-President.

    Research - Laura participated in a summer research program at Loyola University of Chicago. Her project was titled "Lithium/magnesium competition in Human Lymphoblastsomas: A Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Nuclear Magentic Resonance Spectroscopy Study.

    Laura's other activities include participating in the 1998 Fall Appalachia Volunteer Project, participating in Circle K, and as a member of the admissions department VISA group.

     


    Kathryn Goolsby

  • Major: Chemistry with a Biochemical concentration
  • After Saint Mary's - Gradute school in biochemistry at the University of Illinois.
  • Kathryn won the American Institute of Chemists Award from the department.
  • Departmental Service - Katie has been a Teaching Assistant for Chemistry 121 and for Chemistry 323 (Biochemistry Lab).

    Katie has also served as the department's representative to the Student Academic Board (1999-2000) and as the fundraising chair for the Student Affiliate of the American Chemical Society.

    Research - Katie has spent two summers at The Ohio State University's Molecular Genetics Research Oppourtunity for Undergraduates Program. In 1998, her project was "The examination of Protein binding to Polyadenylation Limiting elements A and B". In 1999, her project was "Construction of Plasmid Expression Vectors to Analyze the Interplay of Mutual Endonuclease Cleavage Sites and Estrogen-Induced mRNA degradation in vivo"

    Katie is also the Senior Board's Community Service Chairwoman and is a member of the Admissions Department's VISA group.


    Sharis Long

  • Major: B.S. in Chemistry with a Physics Minor and an Engineering Degree from Notre Dame
  • Plans after Saint Mary's - Graduate School
  • Departmental Service - Sharis is a Teaching Assistant for Organic Chemistry (Chem 221) this year and served the same role for Principles of Chemistry (Chem 121) last year. She has also served as a grader.

    Resarch - Sharis has had two internships over her summers. She has interned at Eckert America (an ink company) and also at Color Matrix (a liquid color company specializing in colorants for plastics). While at Color Matrix, she worked in the Research and Development Department on improvements to process control and productivity.

    Sharis is also active in the College. She is the social committee chair for the Junior Class Board and is a volunteer for Rock the Babies. Sharis is also a member of the indoor and outdoor track teams at SMC and is a member of the Swing Dancing Club.


    Vera Nackovic

  • Major: Chemistry with a Biochemical concentration
  • After Saint Mary's: Law School.
  • Departmental Service - Vera has been a Teaching Assistant for a variety of classes including Chemistry 101, 121, 124 and 111.

    Research - Vera worked with Dr. Kathleen Antol on a project entitled "Basic Biochemistry of Fruit Ripening: A Study Done on the Change in Monosaccharide Concentration in Post-Veraison Grapes"

    Vera has also been an active member of Student government, serving on the Holy Cross Hall Council for three years with a term as the secretary and as the treasurer. She also has volunteered in the local homeless shelter and worked as a HUGS volunteer.

     


    Anne Pangilinan

  • Major: Chemistry with a Biochemical concentration and a minor in Biology
  • After Saint Mary's - Master's Degree in Education form Notre Dame through the Alliance for Catholic Education Program. She will be teaching in Montgomery, Alabama.
  • Anne shares the Mother M. Rose Elizabeth Chemistry Award from the department. She also won the Outstanding Senior Award from the Alumnae Board.
  • Departmental Service - Anne has been a teaching assistant for Chemistry 101 and 102 laboratories. She has also assisted in the lecture sections of Cheistry 121 and 122.

    Anne has also been an active member of SMAACS and served as the treasurer of the group.

    Research - Anne and Dr. Deborah McCarthy received a SISTAR grant from Saint Mary's Center for Academic Innovation to do research over the summer of 1999. Her project was "A Comparison of DRIFTS and FTIR Spectroscopy for the Quantitative Determination of Silica and Phosphorous Pentoxide in a Mixture."

    Anne is also very active outside the department. She sings in the SMC/ND collegiate choir and is a member of the VISA admissions office student group. She has also been very active in student government, serving in the Residence Hall Association, Holy Cross Hall Council, Board of Governance and as Senior Class President.
