Program of Study

Participants can see a part of the world that has been submerged into the shadows for half a century and is now emerging into a transformed and radiant life of its own.

The essence of this study program is to introduce participants to the depth and breath of the history and cultural of Poland and the Czech Republic.  Walking lecture tours are organized for three primary cities; Warsaw (Warszawa), Krakow, and Prague (Praha.)  These three major cities are ideal settings to discussed lived history of 20th century Europe; as we examine the impact of such significant events as Jewish Pogroms, World War II, Communist Occupation, the appointment of Pope John Paul II (Karol Josef Wojtyla,) and formation of the European Union.  We will visit with witnesses and survivors of these various resounding events and experience first hand the social, cultural, economic, religious, and political effects that these events have had on shaping the lives of the Polish and Czech people.

In addition to contemporary history, we will also consider the medieval monarchy, the flourishing of renaissance arts, architecture, and letters, the role of Bohemia in the Reformation, the reign of the Hapsburg Empire, roots of Euro-Jewish history, Napoleon Bonaparte’s impact, and 19th century industrialization & use of natural resources.

Students will have ample opportunity to explore the character of Warsaw, Krakow, and Prague in small groups, as well in lecture tours.  Each day there will be time available for personal exploration to shop for traditional products such as amber, crystal, & hand-crafts and to test your language skill while ordering local cuisine such as pierogi, fresh rye bread, kielbasa, dumplings, sauerkraut, and chocolate!!
