The Heart truth
About Your Risks
One in three American women dies of heart disease. In fact it is the number one killer of women, regardless of race or ethnicity. However, in a recent national survey, fewer than a third of the women who responded were aware of these statistics. Only 9 percent named heart disease as a condition that concerned them - 61 percent named breast cancer.
Because women do not take the risk of heart disease seriously they fail to make the connection between the risk factors and their own chance of developing it. Heart disease strikes at a much younger age than most people think and lifestyle-related factors that increase the risk of heart disease are increasingly common among teenagers and young adults.
Often, making lifestyle changes is all that is needed. Women can lower their risk of heart disease by as much as 82 percent just by leading a healthy lifestyle. Whatever your age, start taking steps to improve your heart health.
