What is an Anchor you might ask. Well, Anchors allow you to move to certain parts of a page. They work
much the same way as links, but instead of using the link to move to a different page, they simply move you
to various sections of the same page. To receive a real life demonstration of how an anchor works,
simply click on the above image entitled "using anchors."
As you can tell, this is the same page. If you do not believe me, simply scroll back up to the top and reclick on the image again.
See, it is the same page!
Anchors are useful tools if you want to have a long page with a lot of different
information on it and need to organize it in a usefull and efficient manner. For instance, I want to include
information about me, my dog, my cat, and my sister all on the same page. The page is long, so instead
of having to scroll all the way down the page, you just need to click on the link at the top of my page
to see the section about my dog, or cat or whatever.
Ex:
| About Me: | ||
| My Dog | My Cat | |
| My Sister | About Me | |
|
|
My Dog is a silly little white thing who thinks that she is the star of the universe. She will not tolerate any other animals and refuses to let us enjoy the presence of other animals.
My Cat is a old grey cat who used to be good at catching mice. However, she is no longer willing to complete that activity and has caused our mouse population to grow exponentially -- just ask my mom.
I am a senior here at SMC who enjoys playing with Web stuff and who has no clue what she wants to do with her life. |
|
See, isn't that nice? Another good example can be found on the Communication and Performance Studies Career Opportunities where
the interior links are at the top of the page right under the main heading.
Alright, so let's get down to how you do it. Let's start with just a basic page. Insert a table of whatever size you want.
Put in your heading
| About Me | ||
Then insert the links that you want to use to navigate your page.
| About Me | ||
| My Cat | My Dog | |
| My Sister | My Goat | |
Now, you have a couple of choices, you can insert you anchors before or after you lay out your page. I always do it after I write my page, but the choice is yours. Anyway, here is my page before anchors.

Now, go to the spot where you want the links to take you. For instance, I want the "My Dog" link to take me to the section about my dog. So, I am going to place and click my mouse at the beginning of that section. Then I'm going to go to the Tool Bar across the top and clicking on Insert and scroll down to Named Anchor.
A notification screen will pop up and as you to name the anchor. Name it as simply as possible
so that you can remember it later on. I'm going to name my first one cat. Once you hit OK, then you can proceed on to making the links. You will get a little yellow symbol with the
anchor
symbol on it.
Now, this next part is a little tricky. Start by highlighting the words you want to be the link (click and drag the mouse across the word or phrase you want to become the link). The properties bar at the bottom of the screen should look like this.
Now it is neccessary to remember what you named the anchors. So I remember that I named my first anchor dog. So where it says Link to the right side of the properties bar, type #cat or whatever you named your anchor. Oh, and the pound sign is neccessary. It needs to be before the name of the anchor. Also, remember if it was lower case or capitalized, etc. It needs to be exact to work. If you do not remember, then simply click on the little yellow anchor and it will show on the properties menu the name of the page.
Repeat this step as many times as you want.
See, it really was easy. Told you!
