FTP
stands for "File Transfer Protocol." An FTP program
is used when you want to transfer files over the internet. In
this case, you'll learn how to transfer files from an off-campus
computer onto the Saint Mary's server.
For
this, you'll need to download an FTP program. There are many available
for free on the internet, but in this instance we will be using
WS_FTP LE. You can download it free here:
http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10064-108-35156.html?tag=st.dl.10064.upd.10064-108-35156
Once
you've downloaded and installed the program onto your hard drive,
open it up. You'll see this window:

Click
on the "new" button, and type in the information as
you see it in the window, except entering your own user id and
user password into the spaces (it's the same that you use on your
SMC email.)
Then
click "apply" and then "ok"
Then
you'll be looking at a window that looks like this:

The
column on the left is your computer, the column on the right is
your space on the Saint Mary's server.
If
you want the information to go on the internet, click on the "WWW"
folder in the right column.
Click
on the "ChgDir" button. Enter the drive that your information
is on that you want to transfer.

And
then click ok.
Go
through the left column and select the information that you want
to transfer.
Now
click on the arrow that is pointing to the right in the space
between the two columns. This will upload your information to
the SMC server.
The arrow pointing to the left will download information from
the SMC server to your computer.
When you are done transfering files, click on the "close"
button to close your connection, and then exit the program.
