Books, Radio Shows and Clubs
If you're looking to read it, hear it or join it, this is the page for
you. I hope that all three of these categories become so large they get
pages of their own. If you know of a musicals radio show or a formal
club for fans, send me the information, even if you can't find an actual
homepage. For those two categories, I'd be glad to list the information
on its own (so to speak...).
Books
- Baker's Plays
- The Walter H. Baker Company is a supplier of all sorts of theatrical
supplies, but specializes in plays and books. They offer games and
contests at this site, in addition to their large selection of plays,
acting accessories and teaching tools.
- Currency Press
- Australia's leading publishing company for the performing arts,
Currency's website includes catalog pages for books and sheet music.
- The
Drama Book Shop
- Playbill Online has made
available this search engine for finding playscripts in print (or at
least those available at the Drama Book Shop). Eleven thousand titles
are listed, so chances are pretty good you'll find what you're looking for!
There is no way to order online at present, but and 800 number is given
for placing your orders with the store.
- The
Musical Theatre Cookbook
- Yum! Serve Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pies at your next party. At last, my
cookbook collection is complete!
- Next!
Auditions
- A great book about auditioning for musical theatre hopefuls. An
entertainting read, as well as being quite useful.
- Musical
Theater books at the MIT library.
- Based on a single library's collection, but this is still a
good starting point for those looking for a good list of titles of
musical theatre books.
- Pioneer Drama Service
- "America's premier publisher of quality plays, musicals, melodramas
and theatrical supplies for every market and every audience." The site
includes synopses of their plays, and an e-mail address for ordering a
copy of their catalog.
Radio Shows
- Broadway Revisited
- A weekly show done by Art Hilgart, a very knowledgable
(and personable) contributor to several musicals-related electronic mailing
lists. Be sure to tune in if you live in Michigan, or are driving through!
Art's many fans will be excited to learn that his
show, which is now on a new station, WMUK 102.1 FM, and at a
new time, 10:00 pm (EST), has also doubled in length (twice the amount
of great music and commentary!). Be sure to tune in!
- Nostalgia
Times
- Bruce Kalver's weekly radio show, featuring interviews with such
musical theatre favorites as Debbie Shapiro Gravitte, Liz Callaway, Judy
Kaye, and others. The station is located in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
This page also includes a trivia quiz, and information on how to order
tapes of previous interviews.
- Say it with
Music
- This Canadian radio show, hosted by Richard Ouzounian, includes
quite a bit of theatre music. NEWSFLASH! You can now listen to
Richard's show live, right from your computer! By going to the CBC Audio homepage, and then clicking
on the "Radio Two Toronto" link, you can hear the show
live via RealAudio every Sunday at
4:00 PM, EST. You need never have a week without show tunes again!
- Show Music on
the Radio
- We'll end this section with a great site that's a compendium of show
music radio shows from all over the US, Canada and England. Stuart J.
Brown has an excellent collection of shows here, which includes station,
time and day of the week. Use the list before you go on vacation, so you
can find show music wherever you might travel! The radio talent behind
these shows will also find much of interest on Stuart's pages.
Clubs
- Backstage
Musical
Club Austria
- A great page filled with information for people who enjoy musical
theatre in Austria. That country is the home of several large
shows, including Beauty and the Beast, and, of course, the
original production of Elisabeth. This site hasn't been updated in
ages, but it still has a good bit of useful information.
- Musical Theatre
Lovers
United
- A San Francisco-based group for fans of Broadway and Movie musicals.
Besides a newsletter and a series of videos, there are top-notch reviews
to read, and much more.
- The Stephen
Sondheim Society
- A London-based club, which has among its members Julia McKenzie and
Stephen Banfield. They arrange colloquia, theatre parties, and
presentations (some by Sondheim himself!). They also publish a journal.
Overseas members are welcome.
