Searching for truth in a new era
By Sister Kathleen Dolphin, PBVM

Prior to December 2004, the word “tsunami” would not have been familiar to most people. Curiously, now one hears it used in ordinary conversation as a metaphor to describe a variety of life situations involving sudden shifts at deep levels that cause chaos on the surface of daily lived experience.

Indeed, the beginning of the third millennium has witnessed a number of shifts at very deep levels, not only in our own American culture(s), but also worldwide. What we thought were certainties in life are now being questioned. The ground beneath our feet does not feel so firm anymore—in Church or world.
It should come as no surprise that, in a time of turmoil and uncertainty such as ours, reasonable people will look for branches to hang onto as the flood surges toward them. And what, exactly, is the nature of the most threatening wave?..read more

Members of the Saint Mary’s family share their impressions of the Papal Succession

Pope John Paul II: “A tough act to follow”
By Shevawn O’Connor ’77

The last five hours in line were mostly wonderful—inspirational, moving, spiritual, exhilarating. Via della Conciliazione had several huge screens and a great stereo audio system with films of JPII, of us in line, of the inside of the basilica, live, all accompanied by various kinds of religious music and prayers and readings in various languages, in addition to what we, in line, were doing. (Singing, meditating, praying—I hadn’t said the rosary in 40 years until last night, and boy, did I make up for lost time.) Seeing the lit façade of St. Peter’s against the black sky at the end of the route, getting closer and closer gave us the strength to continue...read more

Commencement 2005

On Saturday, May 14, 350 graduates and their family and friends formed rank inside the Angela Athletic Facility instead of outside in front of Le Mans Hall due to threats of showers for commencement 2005. It was the first time since 1990 that the ceremony was forced inside. Janet Endress Squires ’72, M.D., director of the division of child advocacy for Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and a professor of pediatrics at the Pittsburgh School of Medicine, delivered the commencement address. “When you work with sickness and tragedy on a regular basis, you have to develop a certain degree of toughness to make it through the day,” says Squires...read more

The Age of Schlesinger - Reflections on Bruno’s retirement
By Ann Leonard Molenda ’58

After 60 years of teaching humanities at Saint Mary’s College, Professor Bruno Schlesinger was named Bruno P. Schlesinger Chair in Humanistic Studies Emeritus April 18, 2005, during a ceremony in Carroll Auditorium. President Carol Ann Mooney ’72 gave an address calling Dr. Schlesinger “a Renaissance man with his abiding interest in music, art, philosophy and history.” In the tribute, President Mooney said, “Dr. Schlesinger’s devotion to Saint Mary’s College for the last six decades is matched only by his students’ devotion to him…If Sister Madeleva dominated the middle third of the 20th century at Saint Mary’s, it is fitting that we call the second half of the century ‘The Age of Schlesinger.’ His influence on Saint Mary’s has been that strong.” ...read more*

Two retirees contribute a combined five decades to Saint Mary’s

An open letter from Mid DePauw, upon her retirement

“Fred Rogers wrote: ‘In every neighborhood, all across our country, there are good people insisting on a good start for the young, and doing something about it.’

“For 25 years I’ve loved being a part of this wonderful neighborhood we know as Saint Mary’s College. Thank you to all my former students as well as the sisters of Holy Cross and faculty and staff colleagues for making these years such a blessing. My heart is filled with so many precious memories of lives, journeys, and learnings shared. “I pray God will enrich Saint Mary’s and all who hold her dear....read more

Resident music historian, Clayton Henderson, bids farewell

Clayton Henderson came to Saint Mary’s a quarter of a century ago to chair the Music Department and teach courses in musicology. He retired at the end of this past semester.

“I was an academic gypsy—moving every four to five years—until I came to Saint Mary’s,” he said. “From almost the start of my teaching here, I recognized that Saint Mary’s was the place I wanted to stay. What makes the College special is that fortuitous combination of things: staff, faculty, and administration committed to making the College the best it can be for our bright, talented students whose futures hold so much promise for us and for a civilized world.”...read more

An audience with the Pope
By Katie Maxbauer McNulty ’97

While his death was inevitable, like many, I felt deep loss at the passing of Pope John Paul II. I was gripped by the rituals performed and tears shed for the only pontiff I remember. Yet, I am fortunate to recall a rare private audience with the pope in November 2003. At that time, I was an invited observer to the 400th anniversary of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (PAS). As a Vatican guest, I lodged in the Domus Sanctae Marthae, the hotel where the cardinals reside during a conclave...read more
