Saint Mary’s Athletic Director Appointed to United States Water Polo Board

NOTRE DAME, Ind.—USA Water Polo, Inc., appointed Saint Mary’s College
Athletic Director Lynn Kachmarik to its eight-member Board of Directors.
Kachmarik’s five-year term begins on May 1.

The board oversees all aspects of United States water polo, including
the Olympic team, national teams, youth programs, and future development
of the sport.

“I am honored to serve on this board. Water polo has been my biggest
athletic passion in life, as I dedicated many years to the sport as a
young woman,” says Kachmarik. “To have the opportunity to give back to
water polo at this point in my life will be rewarding and exciting.”

Kachmarik was—and still is—a pioneer in her sport. She was among the
first group of women to be inducted into the United States Water Polo
Hall of Fame, and the first woman inducted into the Collegiate Water
Polo Hall of Fame.

Kachmarik enjoyed a stellar playing and coaching career that spanned
more than 20 years at both Slippery Rock University and Bucknell
University. She began her collegiate water polo career in 1976 as a
freshman on Slippery Rock University (SRU) women's water polo team. She
garnered All-American laurels in water polo all four seasons she played
at Slippery Rock while also earning All-American status on the SRU swim
team. From 1978-80 she also served as assistant coach of the
university's men's water polo team. Kachmarik was inducted into the
Slippery Rock University Hall of Fame in 1991.

Her success as a player was not limited to collegiate water polo.
Kachmarik was a member of the United States Women's National Water Polo
Team from 1976-88, serving as captain of the squad for six years. She
was selected to the All-World Team in 1978. As a member of the U.S. team
she competed in three World Championships and seven FINA World Cup
tournaments. She also was an assistant coach of the U.S. national team
from 1990-92, including the squad that finished third at the 1992 World
Championships in Perth, Australia.

While playing water polo on the international stage, Kachmarik began a
coaching career in the college ranks. In 1982 she was named women's
swimming coach at Bucknell University and in 1984 was appointed
assistant coach of the university's men's water polo team. Kachmarik was
named head coach of the Bucknell men's water polo team in 1986. In
assuming her new position, she became the first woman to serve as the
head coach of any NCAA men’s team sport. In 1987, her first year on the
job, she was named Eastern Men's Water Polo League Coach of the Year.
She served as the men's water polo coach at Bucknell from 1987-90, the
women's swimming coach from 1981-1994 and the head men's and women's
swimming and diving coach from 1994-1998.

In 1998, Kachmarik relinquished her duties as Bucknell's swim coach to
start up a women's varsity water polo program. In addition to her
playing and coaching, Kachmarik contributed to the sport as an official
in the Southern Conference from 1980-83.

Kachmarik came to Saint Mary’s in 1999. She resides in South Bend with
her husband Scott and three children Katy, Taylor and Josh.
