For Immediate Release: Schmidt's images of people from other cultures document the human face as the site of a sacred or ethical intercultural exchange even as they bring up questions of power and privilege. Originally from Germany, Schmidt now lives in Granger, Ind. He has exhibited his ongoing photographic project, "Sacred Faces," at various sites, including the South Bend Regional Museum of Art, Cape Cod Community College, and Bad Neuenahr Augustinum in Bonn, Germany. He is currently working on a book of photographs of the same name and is writing a memoir on growing up in Nazi Germany. The exhibit is curated by Dr. Shannon Rose Riley, a postdoctoral fellow at the Saint Mary's College Center for Women's InterCultural Leadership. Riley is a scholar and artist whose publications include essays on performance, critical race theory, and postcolonial studies, and whose performances, videos, and installations have been presented in Cuba, the United States, and Europe. Riley has a Ph.D. in performance studies and critical theory from University of California, Davis, and an MFA in studio art from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The exhibit is free of charge and open to the public. For more information, please call Saint Mary's College at 574-284-4591. |
