Saint Mary’s Athletic Director to Compete in Water Polo Championship

NOTRE DAME, Ind.— Saint Mary’s College Athletic Director Lynn Kachmarik
has been running, biking and swimming all over town for months to
prepare for a reunion at Stanford University next month. This is no
family or class reunion, however. Instead, the 1991 national women’s
water polo team—of which Kachmarik was a member—is coming together to
compete in the World Aquatics Masters Championship, Aug. 5-12.

The team, which medaled in the 1991 Sydney World Championship and was
coached by Olympian Sandy Nitta, has been in contact all year to discuss
workouts and share training logs. Nitta will return as the team’s coach.
“I will pass a water polo ball with anyone, anywhere, anytime,” says
Kachmarik about her intensive preparation for the upcoming competition.

She feels grateful that all of her former teammates are willing and able
to train for and participate in this competition. “I’m more excited
about seeing these women again and having fun than swimming up and down
the pool, but it’s a great game that is in my blood.”

The team will compete in the 30-39 age bracket against other teams from
the United States, Canada, Australia and Holland.
