NOTRE DAME, Ind.—The Moreau Art Galleries (M.A.G.) at Saint Mary’s College announces the opening of three new exhibitions: Gina Rymarcsuk's "Abaci: An Approximate Value" was developed at the Women's Studio Workshop residency in Rosendale, NY. Stuart Keeler's "A Collaboration: Stuart Keeler and Italo Calvino" comes from the Kohler Arts and Industry residency in Sheboygan, WI. The third installation, "On Otherness," is a video compilation show of work by artists who participated in the Winter Residency Program at the Hungarian Multicultural Center in Budapest, Hungary. Rymarcsuk's "Abaci: An Approximate Value" was inspired by the convergence of two ideas: the complexity of the English language and its metamorphosis into the universal language as well as the base structure of a balsa wood glider. As an artist who works in a variety of media—photo, printmaking, digital, and ceramic—Rymarcsuk has participated in numerous artist residencies, most recently at the Women's Studio Workshop (Rosendale, NY), the Hungarian Multicultural Center (Budapest, Hungary), and at Wilson College (Chambersburg, PA). "A Collaboration: Stuart Keeler and Italo Calvino" uses Calvino's book “Invisible Cities” as a starting point. Combining architecture and studio based work, Keeler engages the public with his concerns of the built environment. He celebrates the public realm by creating intimate details within a sculptural genre. Keeler is currently a visiting artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The video compilation titled "On Otherness" includes the work of artists who participated in the Winter Residency Program in Budapest, Hungary, sponsored by the Hungarian Multicultural Center. Artists of varying disciplines, ranging from emerging to mid-career, and from all over the world (US, India, and Russia) participated in the program. Six of those artists are featured within this compilation exhibition. The
exhibition runs through September 22. An artists’ reception takes
place Thursday, Aug. 31 from 4-6 p.m. in Moreau Art Galleries.
