Saint Mary’s College Honors Playwright Wendy Wasserstein

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Saint Mary’s College Theatre Department presents “Celebrating Wendy: An Evening of Wasserstein One-Acts,” a collection of seven short plays by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein. The scripts, written at different points in her career, use humor to reveal Wasserstein’s world view; a view which places the trials and triumphs of women front and center.

Saint Mary’s Theatre Professor Katie Sullivan directs the performance. “America, indeed the larger world, really needs more women’s voices in theatre,” says Sullivan, adding that this will be a celebration of Wasserstein’s work and life; a type of memorial service.

Wasserstein (1950-2006) was born in Brooklyn, New York. The recipient of the Tony Award for best play and the Pulitzer Prize for drama for her play "The Heidi Chronicles," Wasserstein was also a professor-at-large at Cornell University. The "New York Times" described Wasserstein as a “chronicler of women’s identity crises.”

“Celebrating Wendy: An Evening of Wasserstein One-Acts” takes place Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 9-11 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2:30 p.m. in the Little Theatre of the Moreau Center for the Arts. Tickets are $9 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, $7 for members of the Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame communities, and $6 for students. Tickets are available through the Saint Mary’s Box Office by calling 574-284-4626 or by visiting the Moreau Center on the Saint Mary's campus Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Moreau Center for the Arts celebrates its 50th anniversary throughout the 2006-2007 season.
