Social Work Post-Graduate Programs

Besides those programs listed below, there are numerous other programs which have a Social Work component. Check these out on the “General Programs” page. If an organization has opportunities in Social Work, it will be noted under their description.

Bon Secours Volunteer Ministry (Baltimore, Maryland; Richmond, Virginia; and Arcadia, Florida): As a post-graduate volunteer, you will have the opportunity to work in health care, social work, and/or education. Social work possibilities include migrant labor, domestic violence issues, housing issues, preventative services, addiction recovery, and much more. Room and Board is provided along with student loan deferment, spiritual retreats, health insurance and a stipend.

Catholic Charities Volunteer Corps (St. Paul, MN): Catholic Charities of St. Paul has a wide variety of placement sites. Some of those for social work include work at the Family Service Center, Refugee Services, Exodus Hotel and Evergreen Residence (short and long term housing for the homeless), St. Joseph’s Home for Children, and others.

Franciscan Volunteer Program (Chicago, and St. Louis): The FVP has several sites in Chicago. For example, The Children’s Place is a center for children living with HIV/AIDS or who have a family member that is living with the virus. The agency works to provide a facility that nurtures families and children. A volunteer placement would mean helping with case management and serving as a part-time teacher’s aid.

Good Shepherd Volunteers (various locations): As a Good Shepherd Volunteer you will give your time, energy and talents to children and families who are experiencing the social stresses of poverty, violence, substance abuse and unemployment. Our sites are located across the United States and in South America and you will work with a team of human service professionals in groups and foster homes for adolescents, alternative school programs, mediation programs, domestic violence shelters, and the like. You will live in community with other volunteers and have ample time for reflection and prayer. The work of the sisters of the Good Shepherd is based on a compassionate acceptance of every individual and a belief in each one’s ability to change and grow.

Lutheran Volunteer Corps (various locations): LVC offers many opportunities for Social Work experience including work with HIV/AIDS, immigration and refugee services, various shelters, social services of various types and work with women and/or youth. One does not have to be Lutheran or even Christian to volunteer.

Maggie’s Place (Phoenix, Arizona): Maggie’s Place is a house of hospitality for expectant women who wish to achieve their goals in a dignified and welcoming atmosphere. Maggie’s Place provides for the immediate physical and emotional needs of our guests and connects the guests to the appropriate agencies and resources for prenatal care, health insurance, housing, and the like. You can serve as a staff member at Maggie’s House. Staff members live in community with the guests and their babies. Each staff member works with one or two guests in a mentor/case management role, in addition to shifts “on duty” and administrative duties.

Mercy Home for Boys and Girls (Chicago, Illinois): Young men and women come to Mercy Home when they are struggling to adjust to difficult or dysfunctional family situations. In some instances they have been the victims of abuse, neglect, extreme poverty or urban violence. The success of Mercy Home continues to be measured by the impressive number of young people who decide to attend college, who enter the trades as apprentices, and who live independently while pursuing personal and career goals. As a post-graduate volunteer, you work directly with clients and gain experience that is invaluable. Professional development is stressed and you will find that your work at Mercy Home prepares you well for graduate school or entering the workplace. Redeemer Ministry Corps (Philadelphia, and southern New Jersey): RMC members commit to a year of service and one of the areas available is Social Work. Being a part of RMC will allow you to grow in your faith life, discover more about yourself and your relationship with God and engage in community prayer, retreats, days of service and reflection and liturgy. All of these are integrated into the service experience.
