INTERNATIONAL LAW AND ORGANIZATION

[Prerequisite: POSC206 or permission]

PROF. MARCY

International law, and international organizations both governmental and non-governmental, are playing increasingly important roles on the international scene. In this course, we will look at international law in general, and at what it has to say about the rights and duties of states, about jurisdiction over individuals and over land and sea, about the way nations conduct their relations and the way they are supposed to conduct their wars. We will look at the UN, and at a few other international organizations, and consider how they work sometimes together and sometimes at cross purposes. To the extent possible, we will use recent examples as a basis for discussion.

Course requirements include a mid-term and final, a few short oral reports, one longer presentation or paper.
