In this course we will look at the foreign policies of selected countries. The policies will be viewed cross-nationally and over time. The reactions of selected states to a single event will be compared, e.g. the response of the Americans, Soviets, and others to the Cuban Missile Crisis, or the international attitude toward the Persian Gulf and the former Yugoslavia. The domestic and international influences on policies will also be compared. The course will be flexible enough to allow students to bring to the class their interests in countries of their choice, to discuss what has occurred in various places, and to predict and analyze the policies that will subsequently follow from Washington and other capitals.
Discussion will be encouraged and a research paper required.
