The end of the cold war confronts the United States with fundamental questions about its role in global affairs. What is the United States' "national interest" in this new period? This class will evaluate United States policy during the cold war, assess its legacy for the present, and try to make educated guesses about the future with regard to important policy issues like trade, human rights, military intervention, and our role in the United Nations. We will also examine the policy-making process through careful analysis of several case studies. The moral dimensions of policy making will also be considered.
