ANTHROPOLOGY - 141, 142, 253, 254

ART - 141, 241, 242 or any entry-level studio course; also 251, 252 taken in Rome

BIOLOGY - 103-104 usually; 151-152 is a possible option. Second semester courses can be taken before first semester courses. A student may not receive credit for both BIOL 103 and 152 or for both BIOL 104 and 151.

CHEMISTRY - 101-102 usually; CHEM 111, 124 or CHEM 121, 122..

COMMUNICATION - 103 or 210.

DANCE - 240, 241.

ECONOMICS - 151, 251 or 252

ENGLISH - ENLT 104, 106, 109, and upper level literature courses with the exception of ENLT 305 and 367; ENLT 221 does not satisfy the basic literature requirement but may be used as a second course.

HISTORY - 101, 102, 103, 104, 201, 202; higher level courses can be used as a second course.

HUMANISTIC STUDIES - 103, 197, 203, 212, 292; higher-level courses can be used as a second course.

INTERCULTURAL STUDIES - 201

MATHEMATICS - Any course except MATH 100. Several major departments require specific mathematics courses, but students can be      counseled by the mathematics department to enroll in courses which are appropriate to their interest and ability.

MODERN LANGUAGE - Two semesters of the same language at the appropriate level. The requirement is normally satisfied by one of the following:

  • For students starting a new language: MLFR, MLGR, MLIT or MLSP 101-102. Students may not receive credit for the introductory course in a language (101-102) if they have taken that language in high school.
  • For students continuing a language they have already studied: MLFR, MLGR, or MLSP 105-106 for students with SATII scores of 400 or lower
  • MLFR, MLGR, or MLSP 111-112 for students with SATII scores of 410 or higher
  • At Notre Dame:  Students may complete their language requirement at Notre Dame if they wish to take a language which is not taught at Saint Mary's. When scheduling, please note the following:

    1) language classes meet four times a week;

    2) language courses are year-long courses. It is not easy (and sometimes not possible) to change sections in January. Please keep second semester schedules in mind while choosing fall courses.

MUSIC - 181, 241, 242, 245, 275 or 276; a combination of lessons or ensembles will NOT satisfy a core requirement.

PHILOSOPHY - 110; higher-level courses may be used as a second course.

PHYSICS - 101-102, 103-104; generally; higher-level sequences are options for students who have a background in calculus.

POLITICAL SCIENCE - 151, 152, 160, 203RM

RELIGIOUS STUDIES - All first year students must take RLST 101. All sophomores must take a course numbered 200-299. Any other student with a legitimate reason for not taking these courses at the designated time must secure permission from the Academic Affairs Office (not departmental advisor). A student may choose a Notre Dame course to satisfy the second course requirement with approval of the chair of Religious Studies.
