Explanation of Codes

1. Department Abbreviation: The title of each department is abbreviated to four or fewer letters. The abbreviation appears in the heading with the location of the department office and the name of the department chair. It also appears in the first column of the course offerings.

2. Course Numbers: The course numbers are assigned as follows: Freshmen level courses 100-199; sophomore level courses 200-299; junior level courses 300-399; senior level courses 400-499.

3. Course Number Suffix: The suffix letters below are generally used to define differences in courses with the same number. All other letters are department specific.
"L" lab section or studio course
"RM" courses taught on the Saint Mary's Rome Campus
"W" indicates courses offered to fulfill the writing proficiency requirement.

4. Credit Hours: If credit hours are blank, the course is usually a lab section associated with a lecture or a course which is taken for no credit. If the letter "V" (variable credit) appears in the credit column, the course may be taken for any credit listed for the course in the College Bulletin. The credits assigned to all courses must agree with the College Bulletin.

5. Exam Code: The "C" denotes courses in which the final examination is given by class, depending on when the class normally meets. The "D" denotes courses in which a departmental final examination is given. All sections of a course giving a departmental final examination are given at a common time not dependent on the time the class normally meets.

6. Exam Times: The final exam schedule is published at the start of the semester.

7. Course Sequence Number: The course sequence number distinguishes each section of each course from all others. The first two digits indicates the department offering the course. The next two digits are unique to the course. The complete sequence number is needed whenever a class is referred to. Incorrect sequence numbers may result in adding or dropping the wrong course.
