SMC Student Reports Suspected Rape

A 21-year-old Saint Mary's College student reported to South Bend police Monday that she may have been raped Saturday, 9/27. The woman said she suspected that a man at the Linebacker Lounge, 1631 South Bend Ave., put a drug in her drink, causing her to black out.

She said she went to the Linebacker on Saturday night with a male friend, and while there, she met his house mate. She said this man was buying her drinks and bringing them to her. In the morning, the woman said she woke up next to the roommate, in his bed, and that she was naked. On Monday, the alleged victim went to the hospital for a rape exam and to see whether a drug was used on her. The Family Violence Unit of the South Bend Police Department is investigating the incident.

Please be reminded of some actions you can take to protect yourselves and each other:

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Remember that alcohol begins to impair your judgment with the first drink.
  • Do not drink beverages that you did not open yourself.
  • Do not share or exchange beverages with anyone.
  • Do not take a drink from a punch bowl.
  • Do not take a drink from a container that is being passed around.
  • Bring your own beverages to a party if possible,
  • If someone offers you a beverage from a bar at a club or a party, accompany the person to order your beverage, watch it being poured and carry the beverage yourself.
  • Do not leave your beverage unattended while talking, dancing, using the restroom, or making a phone call.
  • If you realize that your beverage has been left unattended, discard it.
  • Do not drink anything that has an unusual taste or appearance, (salty taste, excessive foam, unexplained residue, etc.).

THIS INFORMATION IS APPLICABLE TO ANY BEVERAGE, NOT JUST ALCOHOL!

REMEMBER:

  • Appoint a designated person to drive when you go to parties, clubs or other places.
  • Have a plan to periodically check up on each other.
  • If any of your friends appears very intoxicated, gets sick after drinking a beverage, passes out and is difficult to awaken, seems to be having difficulty breathing, or is behaving in an uncharacteristic way, take steps to ensure your friend's safety.
  • If necessary, call 911 or Security for medical assistance.
  • Do not go to a private place (such as his room, your room, a vehicle) with a new acquaintance. If you meet someone you would like to see again, make arrangements to see each other in a public place at a later date.
  • Do NOT rely on them for transportation; make arrangements for your own transportation.

Should you or a friend experience a rape or sexual assault:

1.) Get to a safe place. Contact Security either to report the incident or for
an escort to a safe place.

2.) Tell someone you trust (a friend, Resident Adviser, Residence Hall
Director, Counselor, Campus Minister, faculty member or Nurse).

3.) Preserve all physical evidence. Do not bathe, douche, brush your teeth or gargle. Keep all clothes in a bag. Do not wash them.

4.) Obtain medical attention. Even if time has passed since the incident, it is still important to seek medical attention. Go to Saint Mary's Health and Wellness Services or a local hospital emergency room. St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and Memorial Hospital of South Bend have specially trained sexual assault medical personnel available 24/7.

5.) Report the assault to Security even if you do not know if you wish to prosecute the alleged assailant or pursue internal disciplinary procedures. No immediate decision regarding prosecution or pursuing internal discipline is required while at the hospital or when an initial report of the incident is made to any college official.

As in all such situations, the Saint Mary's College community is here to provide our full support to our students. Students can be confident in the knowledge that privacy and confidentiality are respected. If you have questions please contact Security at x5000

August 30/31, 2003

It was reported over this past weekend to Security, that two Saint Mary's students found themselves as the recipients of unwanted sexual advances in a social setting where alcohol was a factor. Please remember when socializing on or off campus that placing yourself in situations where others are consuming alcohol around you, compounded by your consuming alcohol as well, naturally increases unfortunate instances like this.

Use good judgment and be an active player in your own safety and remember:

1. Alcohol begins to impair your judgment with the FIRST drink!

2. If you go to a party with friends, leave the party with those friends. NEVER leave a friend alone at a party. Depend on each other!

3. If you have a beverage at a party, DO NOT leave it unattended. If you do leave it unattended, GET A NEW BEVERAGE! Be sure to get your OWN beverage; do NOT accept a beverage from anyone.

4. Any beverage can be tampered with. . . not just alcoholic beverages.

5. Be aware of your surroundings at all times!

6. Do not go to a private place (such as their home or your room) with a new acquaintance. If you meet someone you would like to see again, make arrangements to see each other in a public place at a later date. DO NOT rely on them for transportaion. Make arrangements for your own transportation.

Always report any and all criminal incidents and/or suspicious persons and activities immediately to Security at 284-5000.

Be alert! Watch out for yourself and each other, Belles!

Just a reminder about mosquitos.....as you know, there has been a lot of press about West Nile virus and mosquitos.

To be on the safe side, we suggest a few things for your consideration:

1. Never pick up a dead bird, should you find one on campus. Please contact Security, X5000 and report the location of the bird.

2. If you are out in the evenings, it is a good idea to wear long sleeves and pants. Spray insect repellant on your clothes if it has DEET in it...not on your skin.

3. Don't stay around standing water where mosquitos can breed.
