Speaker: Tom
Gerety
“Exit
Callicles: The Liberal Virtues and Human Rights.”
Tom
Gerety became the executive director of the Brennan
Center for Justice at the New York University School
of Law in September 2003. He is also the Brennan Center
for Justice professor at NYU. Gerety had been president
of Amherst College (Mass.) for nine years.
The Center engages in three programs: criminal justice,
democracy, and poverty. The Center’s mission
is to develop and implement an innovative, nonpartisan
agenda of scholarship, public education, and legal
action that promotes equality and human dignity, while
safeguarding fundamental freedoms.
Under his leadership, Amherst College reached its
capital campaign goal of $200 million a year ahead
of schedule, the endowment nearly tripled, and approximately
35 percent of the first-year class was composed of
students of color. Gerety earned four academic degrees
from Yale University: a bachelor’s, a master’s
and a Ph.D., both in philosophy, and a J.D. Before
coming to Amherst, he was president and professor
of philosophy at Trinity College (Conn.).
