Carol
Ann Mooney
At
the end of a nationwide search on December 26, 2003, the
board of trustees announced its selection of Carol Ann Mooney
’72 as the 11th president of Saint Mary’s College.
A native of Norwich, N.Y., Mooney first learned of Saint
Mary’s through her high school guidance counselor,
Elizabeth O’Neill—the sister of the Rev. Theodore
Hesburgh, CSC, then the president of Notre Dame. An English
major, Mooney says, “Apart from my family, Saint Mary’s
has been the single greatest influence on the shape of my
adult life. I received an excellent education, and it wasn’t
just about Chaucer and Spenser and Milton, as much as I
love them. It was about understanding the place of my Catholic
faith in my own adult life and in the modern world. It was
about learning confidence in my abilities and realizing
that I could be a leader.”
After graduating in 1972, Mooney attended the University
of Notre Dame Law School, graduating first in her class
and earning the Colonel William J. Hoynes award. She practiced
law with the firm of Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue in Washington,
D.C., before returning to Notre Dame to join the law school
faculty. At Notre Dame, she taught courses on trusts and
estates, estate planning, and the federal court system.
She co-authored two books and published numerous articles
in law reviews and other scholarly periodicals. In 1983,
Mooney received the law school’s “Teacher of
the Year” award.
In 1996, Mooney was invited to serve as a Notre Dame vice
president and associate provost.
Mooney acknowledges that returning to Saint Mary’s
is a shift from her experience at a large university, but
she believes working in such a prominent institution has
provided tools she can use to help Saint Mary’s continue
as a leader in Catholic women’s education. “We
alumnae know what a profound mark the College has made in
our personal and professional lives. As an academic, I know
that mark is tied to the fact that Saint Mary’s is
associated with excellence and a holistic education—one
that involves an experience tied to small class size, personal
attention, and a focus on the intellectual, social, and
spiritual development of each student. It is my privilege
to serve as the next president, building on the College’s
tradition of excellence and expanding her national reputation.”
