Forecasts
of frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall couldn’t
dampen the spirits of the trustees, faculty, staff,
administrators and students who toiled in a labor
of love to formally welcome Carol Ann Mooney ’72
as the 11th president of Saint Mary’s College
during the inaugural festivities January 14 and 15.
All the events––symposium,
community celebration dinner,
Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary
and inaugural ceremony of Saint
Mary’s first lay alumna president––were
an opportunity to reflect on 160 years of Catholic
women’s education and to continue to look to
the future and Saint Mary’s place in higher
education.

Symposium
“Educating
Women, Transforming Lives: The Liberal Arts in the 21st
Century” brought together great minds from Saint
Mary’s and the greater academic and Michiana communities
to dialog on aspects of the liberal arts and women’s
education on Friday, January 14. Various faculty and students
made presentations throughout the afternoon on results of
their research during previous independent study and research
grants. (View more photos

Community Celebration Dinner
Friends
from around the Michiana region joined Dr. Mooney and administrators
from the College for a gala event at the Palais Royale in
South Bend on Friday evening. The dinner gave the community
an opportunity to celebrate 160 years of Catholic women's
education, to hear from amazing alumnae about Saint Mary's
transformative experience, and to celebrate Carol Ann Mooney’s
appointment as the 11th president of the College. Saint
Mary's offers special thanks to the supporters
of the event.

Mass
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Saturday
dawned bright and extremely cold, but inside the Church
of Our Lady of Loretto, hearts prepared to worship together
and begin the day’s celebration. Bishop John M. D’Arcy
of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese presided. The Reverend
Edward “Monk” Malloy, CSC, president of the
University of Notre Dame, concelebrated and offered the
homily. The service included liturgical dancers and music
by the Saint Mary's College Women’s Choir, the Saint
Mary’s Liturgical Choir and the Handbell Choir, as
well as Scripture readings and gifts offered by Dr. Mooney's
family.

Inaugural
Ceremony
From
the processional to the recessional, the inauguration of
Carol Ann Mooney culminated in two standing ovations from
an audience comprised of trustees, faculty, staff, students,
friends, family and dignitaries from nearly 100 colleges
and universities. After the call to service -- inspirational
charges from representatives of the College, academic, religious
and civic communities -- trustee chair Deborah Johnson Schwiebert
’74 introduced the president and led the audience
in the investiture proceedings. Then President Mooney delivered
her address, highlighting many of the outstanding women,
past and present, who have helped shaped Saint Mary's College.
She also talked about recent graduates who have made a difference
in the world. She concluded, “As I begin my presidency,
you have my promise that I will work hard, be faithful to
our heritage, and work with all of you to shape its meaning
for both today and tomorrow.” •

Student
Organized Events held the week of Jan.,10-16, 2005
|
Saint
Mary’s students celebrated the inauguration of their
new president in their own unique style, selecting a theme
for the week’s events that bridged the two Carol Ann
Mooney eras: “Then and Now.” Some of the carefully
planned events were thoughtful, others thought-provoking,
and some were just for fun. The week started with a relief
effort for the victims of the tsunami disaster. The celebration
continued with discussions comparing social issues of “then
and now” and revisiting the proposed merger with Notre
Dame. As a finale, the students helped officially launch
the 11^th presidency with a post-inauguration dance complete
with 70s music and tie-dye.
