Removing the "Mount Network Drives" application for Diamond

    If you are using a College-provided desktop computer that is running Windows XP, it has an application that automatically runs at startup to mount network drives on Diamond. Since Diamond is no longer in service, this application should be deleted.

    Please use the steps below to stop this application from running automatically your computer at startup.

    1. If the "Mount Network Drives" application window is open on your computer, click Cancel.
    2. Right-click on the Start button.
    3. Select Open.
    4. Double-click on the Programs folder.
    5. Double-click on the Startup folder.
    6. Right-click on the file MountFacultyNetDrives.exe.
      • The file may also be called MountStudentNetDrives.exe or Connect Network Drives.bat or Mount Network Drives.bat or Connection to Network Drives.bat.
      • If there is no file for network drives in your Startup folder, please continue to the next section "Checking to see if you are on the ADSMC domain."
    7. Select Delete.
    8. When prompted, click Yes to delete the file.
    9. Restart your computer.
    Notes:

    • These steps will also need to be taken on any shared computers in your department (for example, computers that more person use).
    • If you do not remove the application from your computer, you will continue to see the "Mount Network Drives" application at startup, and possibly see error messages about being unable to connect to Diamond.
    • Some College-provided laptop computers that are running Windows XP also have this application. You may use the same instructions above to stop this application from running automatically on your computer at startup.
    • The "Mount Network Drives" application will continue to launch at startup in the Windows XP computer clusters and classrooms until Information Technology has an opportunity to remove the application from each computer. Please click Cancel when you see the application window appear.

    Checking to see if you are on the ADSMC domain

    1. Right-click on My Computer.

    2. Select Properties

    3. Click on the Computer Name tab.

    4. If your computer is on the domain, it will indicate Domain: saintmarys.edu.

    5. If your computer is not on the domain, it will indicate the Workgroup: SMC.


    Connecting to fs1 - Instructions if your computer is on the ADSMC domain (most Windows XP desktops)

    All students, faculty, and staff at Saint Mary's College are provided with 1GB of disk space on our network to save their files. This space is accessible from any networked computer on campus, and is commonly referred to as a personal network drive or the H: drive.

    College-owned Windows XP desktop computers on the ADSMC domain should automatically mount your personal network drive on fs1, unless you are using a shared account to log in.


    Connecting to fs1 - Instructions if your computer is not on the ADSMC domain (most Windows XP laptops)

    All students, faculty, and staff at Saint Mary's College are provided with 1GB of disk space on our network to save their files. This space is accessible from any networked computer on campus, and is commonly referred to as a personal network drive or the H: drive.

    1. Click on the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen.
    2. Move the mouse over My Computer to highlight it, then click the right mouse button and select Map Network Drive...
    3. Select H: from the Drive: pop-up menu.
    4. In the Folder: field, type the following:
      \\fs1.saintmarys.edu\yourusername
    5. Make sure that Reconnect at login is checked.
    6. Click Finish.
    7. Type in your Saint Mary's e-mail address (username@saintmarys.edu) and password when prompted.
    8. Do NOT check Remember my password.
    9. Click OK.
    10. A window displaying your network drive should appear.
    11. You can find your network drive by going to the Start menu and selecting My Computer. The network drives should be listed at the bottom of the window.

    12. With Windows XP, your network drive will automatically mount every time you log in to your computer while on the campus network.

    Instructions if you are using a shared computer (more than one person logs into the computer) with a departmental account (not your individual username)

    If you receive the error "H:\ is not accessible. Access is denied." you may be using a departmental computer that has a shared login rather than an individual login (meaning everyone who uses that computer logs in with the same account name rather than their personal username and password). If that is the case, follow the steps below to access your personal network drive.

    1. Click on the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen.
    2. Move the mouse over My Computer to highlight it, then click the right mouse button and select Map Network Drive...
    3. Click on the link Connect using a different user name.
    4. Type in your user name and password when prompted.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Select H: from the Drive: pop-up menu.
      (You may need to select a letter other than H: if that drive is already in use by the shared account. You can select any letter that is not already in use.)
    7. In the Folder: field, type the following:
      \\fs1.saintmarys.edu\yourusername
    8. Make sure that Reconnect at login is NOT checked.
    9. Click Finish.
    10. Type in your user name and password when prompted.
    11. Do NOT check Remember my password.
    12. Click OK.
    13. A window displaying your network drive should appear.
    14. You can find your network drive by going to the Start menu and selecting My Computer. The network drives should be listed at the bottom of the window.

    If you encounter problems connecting to the new network file server (fs1)

    • If you receive the error "H:\ is not accessible. Access is denied" then your personal network drive space may not have been restored from backup yet. Please try again later or contact the Helpdesk for assistance.
    • If you see your network drive under My Computer and it has Diamond in the description, right-click on the drive and select Disconnect from the menu. (You should disconnect from any other network drives that list Diamond is the description, too.) Restart your computer and your network drive on fs1 should automatically appear.
    • Faculty and staff can contact the Helpdesk at x4715 or helpdesk@saintmarys.edu. If you have a laptop computer, you may also visit the Helpdesk in 123 Haggar College Center. The Helpdesk is open 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday through Friday.
