Using the Saint Mary's College SPAM Quarantine web interface

SPAM is unwanted email and it is always prevalent with any email account connected to the Internet. Our SPAM/Virus firewall (from Barracuda Networks) is designed to both block, tag and quarantine email messages that are or look like SPAM. It will NOT catch 100% of SPAM but it will significantly reduce the amount of SPAM in your campus mailbox.

If an email message is quarantined, it will be stored for approximately one week for you to view the message and determine whether it is SPAM or a good message that you wish to continue receiving through your account.

STEP 1: Your alert to quarantined messages via email
(looks something like the message below).

NOTE: If you get an email like the example above or one that has this text but no graphics, you have one or more quarantined messages waiting for you to decide if they are good or bad messages.

NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT VISIT THE QUARANTINE WEB SITE, THE MESSAGE WILL BE PERMANENTLY DELETED AFTER THREE DAYS AND WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR RECOVERY.

If you attempt to connect to the system after the quarantine retention period, you will get a message that your "user session has timed out". This means that the system has deleted the quarantined message(s) in your temporary account on the SPAM system. Please note that if you have no messages in your quarantine account, the system will not allow you to login.

To view your quarantined inbox, click the link labeled "click here". This will automatically take you to the screen below via your default web browser. You can also go the your account by logging into https://barracuda.saintmarys.edu/ with your normal email username and password.

STEP 2
: View your quarantined messages and decide what to do with them.

In the quarantine web screen above, the user has one quarantined message. This user may double click the message to view the contents and determine whether it is a good message or a message that should be tagged as SPAM.

If the message is OK to continue to receive, click the "whitelist" link beside the message then click "deliver" link. This will add this message to your personal "whitelist" or your list of messages that you wish to be delivered to your @saintmarys.edu mailbox.

If the message is SPAM and unwanted, check the box next to the message(s) (left of the message) and then click the "Classify as SPAM" button in the bar above the messages. If you make a mistake and what to reclassify a message as not-SPAM, check the box to the left of the message and then click the button labeled "Classify as not-SPAM".

The only difference between the buttons at the top of the window and the links in the Actions column above is that the buttons at the top allow you to check off multiple messages (left box) and specify groups of messages at one as SPAM or whitelist messages. The Actions column links are used to specify actions on single messages.

STEP 3: LOG OFF

After you have told the system what to do with all your messages, click "LOG OFF" at the top of the window.

There are additional user preferences but we strongly recommend that you not make changes to these settings.

PREFERENCES TAB

You can click the the preferences tab if you wish to manually enter email addresses to whitelist (allow) or blackline (block). This is pretty self-explanatory but if you need help, just call the HelpDesk at x 4715.
