A. Before You Begin

      SpywareBlaster runs on computers Windows XP Professional and Home Editions as well as all editions of Windows Vista.

      These instructions assume that your computer has a working Internet connection.

      • If you are unable to access the Internet from your computer and you live on campus, please contact the ResNet Office for assistance. If you have a laptop computer, you may also bring it to the ResNet Office (no appointment is necessary) for assistance with these instructions. If you have a desktop computer, please fill out a ResNet Problem Report Form at http://fixit.saintmarys.edu/ and ResNet will contact you to set up an appointment in your room.
      • If you are unable to access the Internet from your computer and you live off campus, please contact your internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance. If you have a laptop computer, you may also bring it to the ResNet Office (no appointment is necessary) for assistance with these instructions.
      • If you are a faculty or staff member and you would like assistance with your College-provided computer, please contact the Helpdesk at helpdesk@saintmarys.edu.

      Please move ahead to Section B.


    B. Obtain the latest free SpywareBlaster software by Javacool Software (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/)

    1. Visit http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/
    2. Click on the Free Download button.
    3. SpywareBlaster Web Page

    4. Click on the Continue Download button. (You do not want to select the "Get SpywareBlaster with AutoUpdate no FREE" option.)
    5. You will be taken to a Download.com website. Click Download Now.
    6. When prompted, click on the Save File button.
    7. You may wish to quit your web browser (Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer).

    Please move ahead to Section C.


    C. Install SpywareBlaster, Configure Settings, and Install Protection Database Updates

    1. Double-click on the spywareblastersetup41.exe icon (which should be on your computer's desktop unless you saved it in another location). The name of this file may change slightly as updates are made to the software.

    2. SpywareBlaster's setup program will launch on your computer. Click Next.

    3. Read the license agreement and click the button next to I accept the agreement.

    4. Click Next.

    5. Click Next so SpywareBlaster will install in its default destination location.

    6. Check the box to put a shortcut to SpywareBlaster on the desktop and click Next.

    7. Click Install to begin the installation of SpywareBlaster.

    8. When the software has been successfully installed, Check the box to run SpywareBlaster and click Finish.

    9. SpywareBlaster will launch.

    10. In the Spyware Tutorial window, click Next.

    11. In the Updating Options, click the button next to Manual Updating. (SpywareBlaster charges for Automatic Updating, but Manual Updating is free.)

    12. Click Next.

    13. Click Finish.

    14. In the SpywareBlaster Protection Status window, click the on the link Download Latest Protection Updates near the bottom of the window.

    15. Click on the Check for Updates button.

    16. Please wait while the updates are downloaded and installed.

    17. In the SpywareBlaster Protection Status window, click the on the link Enable All Protection near the bottom of the window.

    18. Please wait while the protection is enabled for all items.

    19. When the update is successful, click OK.

    Please move ahead to Section D.


    D. Finishing up

    You may now drag the spywareblastersetup41.exe file from your computer's desktop to the Recycle Bin. You will not need that file again.

    E. Protect Your Computer with SpywareBlaster's Protection Database Updates

    To ensure the continued protection of your computer with SpywareBlaster, you will need to update the Protection Database daily. To do so:

    1. Double-click on the SpywareBlaster icon on your desktop to launch SpywareBlaster.

    2. In the left column, click on Updates.

    3. Click on the Check for Updates button.

    4. Please wait while the updates are downloaded and installed.

    5. When the update is successful, click OK.

    6. In the left column, click on Protection Status.

    7. Click the on the link Enable All Protection near the bottom of the window.

    8. Please wait while the protection is enabled for all items.


    Congratulations! Your computer is now protected against many of the spyware, adware, browser hijacker, and dialer threats that are on the Internet.

    If you would like additional adware/spyware/pop-up protection, ResNet recommends using removal tools such as Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. These two tools are both free and work well in combination with each other to rid your computer of unwanted software.
