Scheduling automatic
updates:
You may
need to set a schedule for when VirusScan will
automatically update itself to the newest virus definition files. We will now look at how to schedule
anti-virus updates.
1.
To do this, first click on your “Start” button at
the lower left hand corner of the screen after you have logged back into
Windows. Go to “Programs”, then “Network
Associates”, and finally to “VirusScan Console”. You should then get a screen that looks like
this:

2.
Now double click on the task called “Auto
Update”. Once you do that, a “Task
Properties” screen should appear, like the screen below.

3.
Click on the “Configure…” button, and a screen like
the one below will appear.

4. Highlight the site labeled “SMC” if one exists, and click on the “Edit” button the edit the properties. If there is no “SMC” site, click on the “Add” button to add a new site. In both cases, a screen similar to the one below will appear.

5.
To configure Auto Update, type in “SMC” for the
“Site Name” text box, and make sure the “Enabled” check box is checked. Then make sure that “UNC Path” is chosen, and
the line \\diamond.saintmarys.edu\public\Software Distribution is typed into
the “UNC Path” text box. Click on “OK”
to confirm your configuration.
6.
Now click on the “Schedule” tab from the “Task
Properties” box. A screen like the one
shown below should then appear.

Click on
the “Enable” box to enable the AutoUpdate task. Run the task once a day by selecting the “Daily”
button. Under the “Start at” category,
select a time (using the 24-hour clock) that is when you know your computer
will be on, but you won’t be likely to be using it. Then click on “Apply” and then “OK” to
confirm your configuration.
7.
The very last thing you need to run Auto Update for
the first time. Click on the “Program”
tab again, and then click on the “Run Now” button. This will update your virus definitions and
your virus-scanning engine to ensure that Virus Scan can clean your computer of
even the newest viruses.
