VirusScan 4.51 for Windows
McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1 Installation Instructions for Windows
VirusScan is virus-protection software that is available for use on
College-owned and personally-owned Windows computers of faculty, staff and students.
It is standard software on every public and office computer running Windows. If
VirusScan is not already on your Windows computer, you can install the software
using the instructions below.
Even if you have VirusScan installed on your Windows computer, you must
still update your VirusScan virus definition files weekly to keep your
virus-protection software up-to-date. These instructions will also walk you
through how to configure VirusScan to automatically update its virus definition
files at least once a week, but preferably daily.
System Requirements:
- An Intel Pentium class or
comparable processor (Intel Celeron, AMD K-6, etc.).
- At least 75 MB of free hard
disk space.
- At least 20 MB of memory
(RAM).
- Microsoft Windows 95, Windows
98, Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or later, Windows 2000
Professional, or Windows XP.
- A connection to the Saint
Mary’s College campus network.
To check for these requirements, right click on the "My Computer"
icon on your desktop, and select "Properties" from the menu. A screen
should appear that gives you your operating system and the amount of RAM that
your computer has. Then double click on "My Computer" and left click
on your hard disk (usually the C: drive) and select "Properties" from
the main menu. This will give you how much hard disk space that you have
available. You should be able to meet these requirements, especially if you
have a newer computer.
Note: Before you go any further,
if you are using Windows XP, make sure that you are logged in using an account
with administrator privileges in order to uninstall or install any programs.
Getting Started:
Before you install VirusScan 4.5.1 onto your system, you must first remove
any older versions of McAfee or any other anti-virus protection that you have
already installed. You do not need to worry about this if anti-virus protection
has never been installed on your system before. Just follow these steps to
delete your existing versions of anti-virus protection.
- Click on the
"Start" button on the lower left hand corner of your desktop and
select "Settings" and then "Control Panel," or just
click on the “Start” button and go to “Control Panel” if you are using
Windows XP.
- Double Click on the icon for
"Add/Remove Programs."
- There should be a box with the
list of programs on your system. Scroll down and highlight any variation
of "McAfee VirusScan," as in the example below, or to any other
anti-virus program (Norton Antivirus, F-Secure, etc.). The picture on the left is from a
computer using Windows 98, and the picture to the right is from Windows
XP.

- Now click on the button that
says "Add/Remove" if you are using Windows 98, or click on the
“Remove” button if you are using Windows XP. This will start the process of removing
the anti-virus software from your system.
- The steps involved in
uninstalling your old anti-virus software differ based on the software
package that you are uninstalling.
Please follow the screens that appear, so that all of the files and
software from your old antivirus program are deleted off of your computer.
Installing VirusScan 4.5.1 Service Pack 1
- To begin installing
VirusScan 4.5.1 SP1, double click on "My Computer" and open the
"Public" shared drive by double clicking on it as well. If you
have no public drive on your computer, make sure that you are completely
logged into the Saint Mary's network. If you think you are logged in but
still have no public drive, either contact your Residential Computing
Consultant if you are a student ( http://fixit.saintmarys.edu), or the Help Desk because
you may have a network problem.
- Now that you are in the Public
drive, open the folder called "Software Distribution" and then
open the folder called "VirusScan 4.51 SP1" within Software
Distribution.
- Double-click on the icon
called "NetworkVScan451.msi," which has the same icon as the
"Setup.exe" file in the same folder, to launch the VirusScan
setup program. If you are not able to find the
"NetworkVScan451.msi" icon, you must do the following:
For Windows 95:
- Click on the “View”
menu from the toolbar at the top.
- Then click on
Options from the View menu.

a list of viewing options. Uncheck the option "Hide MS-DOS File
extensions for the files types that are registered" and then click
the "OK" button.
For Windows 98:
i.
Click on the “View” menu from the toolbar at the top of
the window.

iii.
A screen should then appear with three tabs. Click on
the "View" tab.
iv.

files. Uncheck the "Hide File extension for known file types" option
and click on "OK."
For Windows XP:

of the window.

Uncheck the "Hide File extension for known file types" option and
click on "OK."
Note: If clicking on the
"NetworkVScan451.msi" icon does not launch the VirusScan setup
program, you need to install Microsoft Installer for the McAfee VirusScan setup
program to work. If you look in the same folder where
"NetworkVScan451.msi" is located (P:\Software Distribution\VirusScan
4.51 SP1), there is an icon called "Instmsi.exe." Double click on
that icon, and the Windows installer will be installed on your machine in a few
seconds (in some cases you may need to reboot; Windows will let you know if you
need to restart your computer). Then try double clicking on
"NetworkVScan451.msi."
- The product information
screen should appear first. You may choose to read it, but click on
"Next" to continue with the installation.
- Then the license agreement
should appear. Click on the button next to "I agree to the terms of
the license agreement," and then click on the “Next” button to
continue.
- Then the "Setup
Type" screen should appear. Click on the button next to "Typical
Installation" and hit the "Next" button to continue with
the setup.
- Click on the
"Install" button to begin the installation. A screen will then
appear showing you the progress of the installation.
- After the installation has
completed, a screen like the one shown below will appear. Make sure that
you uncheck the boxes next to "Create Emergency Disk" and
"Run Default Scan after installation," but leave the box next to
"Scan boot record" checked. Then click on "Next," and
VirusScan will then do a short scan of important files on your system.

- Next the "Update Virus
Definition Files" screen should appear. Make sure that you click on
the button next to "Run Auto Update Now" and hit the “Next”
button to continue. Then the AutoUpdate utility will run, which will
update your virus definition files.
Note: By default, the AutoUpdate feature is
set to update your virus definition files every day between 11:30 am and 12:30
pm. If you would like to set the feature for a more convenient time for you
(usually the update feature is silent and you won’t even notice it!), just
follow this link for some instructions: http://www.saintmarys.edu/~virus/virusscan/AutoUpdate.html.
- Finally, you will get a
screen like the one shown below. Click on "Finish" to finish the
installation of VirusScan 4.51 SP1.

You have now successfully installed McAfee VirusScan on your Windows system!
