2009 in Review:

Pacific Asian Museum Tour:  In April, alumnae met at the Pasadena Museum to tour the exhibits and grounds and meet for lunch. The event was organized by Colleen O’Brien Carey ’74 and Colleen Flynn Roohan ’85. Everyone enjoyed meeting for this mid-week cultural event.

Regan Library Tour:  On May 3, 2009 alumnae met at the Regan Library for a docent led tour and luncheon. The event was organized by Rosemary Mullahey, ‘48, President of the Central Coast Club. It was a beautiful day and a wonderful opportunity to tour the museum and share lunch with alumnae and friends.

New Student Send-Off:  On July 25, 2009 alumnae, current and new Saint Mary’s students and their parents met at the home of alumna, Pat Greeley Lechman ’63.  All enjoyed the dessert reception, meeting each other and kicking off the Saint Mary’s experience.

Founders’ Day Brunch: On October 25, 2009 alumnae and friends celebrated Saint Mary’s Founders’ Day with mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels followed by brunch at the Biltmore Hotel.  The Club’s special guest was Daniel Meyers, Vice President of Student Enrollment.  Dan addressed the importance of California student enrollment to the future of Saint Mary’s.

LA Club Scholarship: At the Founders’ Day event, the Club organized an opportunity drawing that featured several prizes including a night’s stay at the Biltmore and a basket of Saint Mary’s goodies.  Pat Greeley Lechman ’63, sold note cards reproduced from watercolors she painted of Saint Mary’s campus.  Lucy Hanahan DaGiau ‘83, sold jewelry she designed.  Proceeds from alumnae craft sales and the drawing went to the Club’s scholarship fund. For the last three years, Kendall Davis ’11 has been the recipient of the LA Club scholarship.  Kendall is pursuing a major in communicative disorders.  She is a volunteer at the Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) on Saint Mary's campus, a member of the Sisters of Nefertiti; and, a manager of the Notre Dame Marching Band.

A Year in Review: 2008

In 2008, the Club organized a monthly lunch get-together on the Westside. In August of 2008, alumnae and current students met at the home of alumna, Pat Lechman ’63  to “send-off” new students from the Los Angeles area to Saint Mary’s.   Saint Mary’s student, Kendall Davis ‘11  and alumnae were there to provide members of the '12 class with some pointers and helpful hints for their first year at Saint Mary’s.

On November 23, 2008, the Los Angeles alumnae celebrated Founders’ Day with Sisters of the Holy Cross in attendance. Cardinal  Roger Mahoney welcomed us at the celebration of the mass at Our Lady of Angels Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles .  After mass, a brunch was held at the Biltmore Hotel, featuring  Kara O’Leary, Director of Alumnae Relations for Saint Mary’s, as guest speaker. She presented an overview of the marketing of the  identity of Saint Mary’s.  The event raised over $2000 for the LA Club Scholarship fund.

2007 was a noteworthy year for the Club…

Los Angeles Club Endowed Scholarship: In 2007, we asked for your support to endow our scholarship fund.  Your response was overwhelming.  We not only achieved our fundraising goal, we exceeded it.  With your generous support and a matching gift from Saint Mary’s, we raised enough funds to endow the Los Angeles Club scholarship.  We have created a lasting legacy, which will help students from Los Angeles for years to come.  The first Los Angeles Alumnae Club Scholarship was awarded to Kendall Davis ’11 from Los Angeles at the start of the 07-08 academic year.  Kendall intends to pursue a nursing degree.

Did you know… that 27% of the class of 2011 has an alumna connection to the College?  The current freshman class has seven students from the Los Angeles area and it is the largest freshman class in over 20 years.  Encourage someone you know to apply to Saint Mary’s.

Did you know… that for the academic year 07-08, Saint Mary’s tuition and room and board was $35,550? Are you aware that 90% of Saint Mary’s students receive financial aid in the form of scholarship, grants, work and loans? With the endowment of our scholarship fund, at least one Los Angeles area student will be awarded a scholarship on an annual basis.

Student Send-Off: On August 9, 2007, alumnae and current students met at the Cheesecake Factory in Redondo Beach to “send-off” new students from the Los Angeles area to Saint Mary’s.  New students, Kendall Davis ‘11 and Sammy Bello ’11, attended the event.  Saint Mary’s student, Megan Pelc ’08, and alumnae were there to provide Kendall and Sammy with some pointers and helpful hints for their first year at Saint Mary’s.

Founders’ Day: On October 27, 2007, the Los Angeles alumnae celebrated Founders’ Day.  Los Angeles alumnae, husbands/partners and friends were graciously welcomed by Holy Cross priests, who celebrated mass at Saint Monica’s Church in Santa Monica.  After mass, a luncheon was held at Marix Tex-Mex.  Richard Baxter, Director of Special Events for Saint Mary’s was the Club’s special guest.  Richard attended the beatification of Father Moreau in Le Mans, France on September 16, 2007 and shared his experience.

YOUR DUES ARE DUE! The club is currently accepting dues for 2008. Dues play an important role in club upkeep, i.e. allowing us to send out mailings and invitations and to sponsor club events. Dues are $30 for alums who graduated in 2006 and earlier. 2007 graduates are extended a one-year membership for free. Please make checks payable to: Saint Mary's Alumnae Club of Los Angeles, and mail your club dues to Rebecca Votto (Apt. C, 930 West Balboa Boulevard, Newport Beach, CA 92661) or bring to one of the upcoming club events. Please feel free to contact Rebecca if you have any questions.
