Book: Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson

This 1938 best-selling novel was recently turned into a wonderful independent film starring Frances McDormand and Amy Adams. It tells the tale of a dowdy governess who, stumbling into the employ of a free-wheeling nightclub singer, undergoes a psychological makeover while putting some order into her charge's unruly existence.
Further details, directions and the opportunity to RSVP can be found in the EVITE invitation sent via e-mail. If you are not on the SMC Book Club mailing list and would like to be, please contact Hayley Dawson-Owens '02 (hdawson1@hotmail.com) to be included. All local alums are welcome!!

2008 Annual Student Send-Off
This year's Student Send-Off was graciously hosted at the home of Barbara Geelan Wareham '94 in Dallas on August 10th. We had 1 first-year student from the area along with 13 returning students to send off this year, and several of them were able to join us for this annual gathering. It was great visiting with these young ladies and their families. All seemed to be very excited about heading up to The Bend. We wish all of our local students the very best for this new school year!
Passing on the Torch: Thank You, Linda!!! Welcome, Maura!!
Earlier this year, after several years of returning to the "Officer's Club" to serve as our trusty Treasurer, Linda Kawecki '79 decided to accept a position on the Alumnae Board and asked to step down as Vice President of the Club. We THANK YOU, Linda, for all of your time, dedication and commitment to the Club!! Maura Nugent Bardsley '77 graciously accepted the offer to fill the Treasurer's position and we'd like to WELCOME her aboard!
2007 Annual Christmas Mass & Dinner
We had a wonderful turn out for our Christmas celebration on December 8th, The Feast of the Immaculate Conception, held at the home of Jan Clements Miller '80 and her husband, Terry. Many thanks, of course, go to Jan and Terry for opening up their home to us and for all the effort that went into preparing it for us. What a lovely home and what gracious hosts you were! Additional thanks go to Emilie DesJardins '05, our Club's new Vice President, who was the one that took care of coordinating all of this year's party details with Jan. She did a fabulous job! Thank you, Emilie! We hope that you all had a lovely Christmas and look forward to seeing you again next year.

Saint Mary's College Women's Choir Concert - March 15, 2007
The Club was thrilled to have the Saint Mary's Women's Choir stop in Dallas on their Spring Break '07 Tour. Several alumnae and friends joined us for their Thursday evening concert at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano. The choir treated us to a wide variety of pieces from both classic and conteporary works. We were additionally delighted by the popular songs playfully perfomed by the Bellacappella group, a student-run ensemble composed of 13 of the 40 choir members. Such wonderful music and an excellent performance!! Many thanks to all of them for coming to Dallas! Additional thanks are due to the alumnae that hosted students while they were in town: Jeannette Friedewald Lynch '64, Fran Conroy Cowherd '73, Ann L. Carlson '73, Dot Spollen Johnston '81, Carolyn Neuhoff Shaw '83, Ellen McQuillan Drake '92, Beatriz Castillo de Vicente '93, Jennifer Danahy Stewart '93, Theresa Causa Major '95 and Hayley Dawson-Owens '02. Below are a few of the photos from the concert and reception that followed.

50th Anniversary Reception with President Carol Ann Mooney '72
On Oct. 6, 2005, local alumnae gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the DFW Alumnae Club with a guest visit from Saint Mary’s College President Carol Ann Mooney ’72 and Shari Rodriguez, the Vice President for College Relations. All who attended enjoyed a splendid evening at the home of Dan and Lydia Haggar Novakov ’72. For many, it was a first opportunity to finally meet President Mooney, who took helm of the college in June of 2004. In honor of our club’s 50th anniversary, President Mooney shared with us some interesting facts about Saint Mary’s and the DFW Alumnae Club from 50 years ago. She also spoke to us of the current goings-on of the College and some of the key initiatives that she and others are working towards. Many thanks go out to those of you who were able to join us. Special thanks are due to the Novakovs for generously hosting the event and to President Mooney and Vice President Rodriguez for making the trip down to Dallas to celebrate with us.
Endowed Scholarship Update
In addition to the $7,500+ that had been collected up to the beginning of this year (and the $5,000 contributed by the Lilly Foundation), almost $500 more was contributed to the scholarship fund by those turning in their 2004-2005 dues checks and Christmas party R.S.V.P.s. Thanks for your continued generosity!!! At this point, these contributions permit us to award a $500 scholarship to one of our local students each year.
The Dallas Club looks forward to continued growth and we are especially interested in enticing more younger alumnae to join the club. So, if you are new to the Dallas/Fort Worth area, please do not hesitate to give one of the club officers a phone call to join the club. The club is here to serve our local alumnae and we have over 200 alumnae living in the DFW metroplex. So, go ahead and make that phone call and join the club!!
