What are they saying?

My "life after Saint Mary's" has been interesting, to say the least. I am in Japan teaching English and have been having a pretty unique experience of it. I came with Nova, I arrived in Osaka in September and they went bankrupt in November. I became aware of the situation two weeks before my flight. I decided to go anyways because I had been planning on it and expected the potential bankruptcy to take a few more months but it collapsed sooner than anyone expected.

I've been working at a new job with Napa (California) Emergency Women's Services since last September. We work mainly with victims and survivors of domestic violence, and there are a lot of things that fall under our little umbrella. I had been volunteering with them for most of this past summer, and then found out about a job opening in September. So I applied, and got the job! I'm working now as a case manager at the emergency confidential shelter. I love it so far because I get to work directly with the clients and children, which can be exhausting sometimes of course, but typically ends well in them finding new housing and moving on to start a new life free of violence.

Carrie Beth Goldbeck Nunes, '99

At Saint Mary’s, I majored in sociology with a concentration in anthropology.  I was drawn to cultural anthropology because of a fascination with other ways of life, and loved reading ethnographies of various cultural groups around the world. It was 10 years ago this summer that I got my first taste of anthropological fieldwork, when I traveled to Scotland with Dr. Kate Shoupe, after having been awarded a SISTAR grant to examine the social meaning of traditional dance. Finally I had the chance to experience another culture firsthand, and because it was Dr. Shoupe’s geographical focus, she had prepared me for what to expect. I will never forget that summer, as it was the springboard to more anthropological pursuits.

Sarah Orr Lehman, ‘96

I graduated from St. Mary's in 1996 with a BA in Anthropology; it was not only my academic interest, but a passion I pursued outside classroom as well.  Just after graduation, I joined the Madaba Plains Project, an archeological investigation of ancient Ammon, Moab and Edom in the present day country of Jordan, which is a program of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI.  Working in the Middle East I got to experience many cultural aspects of the society, especially concerning disability, thus prompting a career move into the disability field.

Angie Everett Drews, ’94  -- back to graduate school!

Hello from Eastern Illinois University! I am well into my studies now and it is hard to find much free time at all. My program in Historical Administration began on August 20, 2007. It is super intense but I am really enjoying my classes, the professors and my fellow students. I am also working at the Tarble Arts Center as my graduate assistantship, the art museum on campus, and that has been fun, as well. My first week of work we had a black tie gala event celebrating the art center's 25th anniversary.
