Anthropology: the study of human life & cultures past and present, across the globe.

The Program in Anthropology offers a course of study that introduces the unique perspectives of the discipline:

  • a holistic orientation towards the study of culture
  • a comparative approach to sociocultural analysis
  • an emphasis on both the description and the interpretation of culture
  • a concern for the ethical practice and application of knowledge

The Minor in Anthropology

The minor in Anthropology provides an introduction to the four fields of anthropology and to the research methods and theoretical paradigms of the discipline. Elective courses enable students to pursue their own interests.

Required courses:

The Student Designed Major

Given the interdisciplinary nature of anthropology, a student may wish to consider the option of the Student Designed Major. In this program, a superior student may design an interdisciplinary program of study which uses culture as a framework to organize her specific concerns.

Interested students must declare their intentions by spring semester of their sophomore year and submit a proposal with the help and advice of a faculty sponsor. Students who are abroad that semester have the deadline for submission extended to November 1 of the following fall semester.

ANTH 495, Senior Seminar, normally fulfills the Senior Comprehensive requirement. Plans for fulfilling the Advanced Writing Proficiency will be determined by the student in conjunction with her SDM Committee.
