Art Department Mission Statement

The Department of Art at Saint Mary’s College is an integral part of a creative community where women develop their talents and prepare to make significant contributions to the larger environment.

The Department of Art encourages a rich intellectual life including aesthetic and conceptual exploration, spiritual investigation and social responsibility. Faculty serve as mentors offering a course of study which fosters the mastery of varied artistic skills and that reflects the critical and creative thinking of the liberal arts. This liberal education seeks a balanced acquisition of knowledge through formal, academic involvement, interdisciplinary applications, as well as through non-traditional learning such as travel, internships, and multicultural exposure.

In its local community as well as in the larger world, the Department of Art shares in the College’s broader ambition to provide its students with keen self-knowledge, lively imagination, lifelong intellectual and cultural interests, and the ability to make socially responsible choices about the future.
