Catalyst Project

The word catalyst was carefully chosen: “an agent that provokes or speeds significant change or action.” The Catalyst Project supports transformation and growth for diverse women leaders and their community change efforts in the Michiana area. We provide dynamic learning opportunities like the Catalyst Trip, along with year-round programs, that emphasize participatory approaches that honor the strengths and experiences of each woman.

Places We’ll Be Visiting…

Grailville

was started by Catholic lay women 60 years ago, initiating the U.S. chapter of the International Grail Movement .  It was founded in 1943 by 14 religious women on 300 acres in Loveland, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati, set in the beautiful, rolling hills of southwest Ohio.  The Grail women literally and figuratively broke new ground as a women-led spiritual and agrarian-based experiment.

The history of Grailville is fascinating, a rich story of women shaping history and taking charge of their political, personal and spiritual lives. Co-founder Janet Kalven, writes that three elements make Grailville stand out: “risk taking, a strong community and a compelling vision.”  Today, Grailville is a center for alternative education and leadership training for women that focuses on women’s empowerment, spirituality, social justice and the environment.  Visit their website at: http://www.grailville.org.

The Peaslee Neighborhood Center

is a re-claimed school building dedicated to the educational and cultural development as well as the political empowerment of the people who live nearby. The Center is located near downtown Cincinnati in what is called The Over-the- Rhine neighborhood, an area plagued by crime and threatened by “gentrification.” Peaslee houses a child care facility, a homework room, a community meeting room, and a music program.  It is famous for its Over-the-Rhine Steel Drum Band. Visit their website at: http://www.overtherhine.org/peaslee/programs.html.

We will also be visiting with other community-based organizations in the Over-the-Rhine community and we walk the neighborhood to witness the clash of a historically poor neighborhood being rapidly developed by downtown professional and cultural interests.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

tells the story of freedom woven through the heroic legacy of the Underground Railroad and the American struggle to abolish enslavement and secure freedom for all people.  Located in downtown Cincinnati, the Center uses state-of-the-art technology and is made up of three pavilions that symbolize courage, cooperation and perseverance - the Freedom Center's curving architecture reflects the winding river and the often-changing path to freedom.  Visit their website at:  http://www.freedomcenter.org/visit/visit-the-freedom-center.

WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT:

The Catalyst Trip is an educational experience with a diverse group of women intended to shift your thinking and support your leadership.  We cover a lot of material and territory so you should be prepared for long days, usually 12 hours, which are often emotionally intense, however, we have had women in their 70s and women with disabilities who have fully engaged with the experience.

Please notify us of any special needs. There is a non-refundable commitment fee of $25 that must be received with the application. Make checks payable to Saint Mary's College. It is refunded if you are not selected, but not refunded if you are selected and then cancel. The cost of transportation, lodging, workshops, and most meals are covered by CWIL through a generous donation from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. You will pay for one meal on your own, and a tip for the bus driver (about $10) and any gifts or incidentals you need.
