China Summer Program
Saint Mary’s College, in collaboration with Creighton University and the Soong Ching Ling Foundation, is offering a three week study abroad program in the summer of 2008. Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the 5000-year history of this fascinating country while earning 3 hours of credit.
Location
Students will fly to Beijing for a week’s stay in a modern hotel in a non-tourist neighborhood. They will enjoy guided tours of the Forbidden City, Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace, National Museums, and Ming Dynasty Tombs. They will meet Chinese university students and participate in a service project. Then they will move to Xi’an to visit the Terra Cotta Army burial site of first Emperor of China. Afterwards, students will tour Datong’s Yungang Buddhist Caves, go to Wutai Buddhist Temples, experience Suzhou’s Scholar’s Gardens, Tongli’s Water Village, and end their visit in the modern metropolis of Shanghai.

Program of Study
The Art Department of Saint Mary’s College offers a study abroad opportunity in China during the summer of 2008. Some Saint Mary’s students will be chosen to take part in this program with students from Creighton University, which will be led by two or three faculty members. The travel adventure will include the choice of a two or three credit course on either Chinese Art or Chinese Philosophy. Because this travel opportunity is supported by the Soong Ching-Ling Foundation in China, it is a rare opportunity!
You may choose one course for credit:
Introduction to Chinese Art —taught by Marcia Rickard, Saint Mary’s College Art Department (2-3 elective credits for non-majors; 2-3 art history credits for art majors)
Or: Chinese Philosophy—taught by Jinmei Yuan, Creighton University Philosophy Department (3 elective credits)
Housing
All students are housed in the local hotels in different provinces in China.
Transportation, Costs, and Financial Aid
Basic costs are kept to a minimum. The program fee is $3500, and covers tuition, hotels, meals, transportation within China, museum and historical site entry fees, and airfare to and from China. There is a $35 application fee.
Participants from Saint Mary’s College are eligible for CWIL grants through the Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership and the Office of Financial Aid.
Eligibility
The China Summer Program is open to undergraduates who will be returning to campus in the fall of 2008. Eligibility is based on academic record, personal recommendations, application essay, and the assurance of readiness for studying overseas.
