OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK, VOLUNTEER, AND STUDY ABROAD

There are a variety of programs that offer students before and after graduation opportunities to work, study, and live abroad.  Listed below are resources if you are interested in work, volunteer efforts, internships, or other international experience.

 

BUNAC: Work, Volunteer and Teach Abroad

BUNAC offers a range of working holidays including a summer camp counseling programs in the USA and Canada, flexible work and travel programs to Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Britain and South Africa and volunteering/teaching placements. These are open to 18 year olds and over in the UK and the USA. Programs last from five weeks to two years.

PEACE CORPS

The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship.

Since that time, more than 187,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have been invited by 139 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation.

Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, working in emerging and essential areas such as information technology and business development, and committing more than 1,000 new Volunteers as a part of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities.

Summer in China

US-CHINA Education and Culture Exchange Center (UsChinaEdu), a non-political, non-religious, non-profit organization committed to develop a needed symbiosis between two nations separated by 10,000 miles. UsChinaEdu's mission is to foster cross-cultural understanding between Chinese and Americans. The organization achieves this goal by providing Americans and Chinese with various educational opportunities to study, work and live in US or China. UsChinaEdu's home office is located at Bridgeport of Connecticut state. and field office runs its China operations at Hangzhou of China. The US-China Education & Culture Exchange Center is an independent organization and has no affiliation with the University of Bridgeport.

Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET)

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme aims to promote grass roots internationalization at the local level by inviting young overseas graduates to assist in international exchange and foreign language education in local governments, boards of education and elementary, junior and senior high schools throughout Japan. It seeks to foster ties between Japanese citizens (mainly youth) and JET participants at the person-to-person level.

JET Programme participants are placed in Contracting Organizations throughout Japan. Contracting Organizations consist of 47 prefectural and 15 designated city governments, individual city, town and village governments and some private schools. JET participants sign their contracts with their Contracting Organization and as such, they are under the jurisdiction of the local authority which employs them. CLAIR implements the JET Programme at the national level in conjunction with three of the Japanese Ministries.

IIE Gilman Scholarship: Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Founded under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 this congressionally-funded program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. The Gilman Scholarship program aims to broaden the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who have been traditionally underrepresented in US study abroad and those with high financial need.

 

The program encourages students to choose nontraditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia, and aims to support students traditionally underrepresented in US study abroad.  This includes but is not limited to, students with high financial need; community college students; students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering; students with diverse ethnic backgrounds; and students with disabilities. The program seeks to support applicants from a diverse range and type of two-year and four-year public and private institutions from all 50 states.  Community College students are particularly encouraged to apply.

 

The Gilman Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students to pursue country-based undergraduate opportunities abroad that are a minimum of four weeks and up to one academic year in length. To be eligible, students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Rotary Club Study Abroad Opportunities

Rotary Club programs for students and youth can change the lives of those who participate. Through these programs, young people can earn scholarships, travel on cultural exchanges, or help a community through a service project. U.S. Department of State Internships

Students of all levels will find that the U.S. Department of State is a rewarding place to acquire skills that will last a lifetime. The State Department has a variety of programs, from summer clerical positions to management fellowships, all of which allow students from high school to the post-graduate level the ability to participate in projects vital to the success of U.S. foreign policy. Overseas or in Washington D.C., there's a student program that matches your background and will help you to achieve your goals.
