Strategy for Financing Study Abroad
Step 1: Plan Early
Funding sources are available to qualified students purusing study abroad; however, students need to plan early. When applying for grants and scholarship, there are often requirements such as evidence of extra curricular activities, letters of reference, and writing samples which entail additional time to complete.
Step 2: Review Financial Aid Package
For students participating in a Saint Mary's-sponsored program, (most) of your financial aid package, loans, grants and scholarships can be applied to your semester/year abroad. Check out whether your financial aid can be applied toward study abroad (pdf).
For students participating on Non-Mary's Sponsored Programs, (in most cases) only your federal aid can be applied.
Financial aid is not available for summer programs; however, Saint Mary’s students may apply for alternative loans, Saint Mary’s Intercultural Learning Grants, and study-abroad scholarships.
For additional information on financial aid please contact the Office of Financial Aid.
Step 3: Apply for an Intercultural Learning Grant
- Two types of grants are awarded each semester from The Center for InterCultural Leadership (CWIL) to support the intercultural experiences of Saint Mary’s students.
Step 4: Apply for External Scholarships
- Study Abroad Scholarship (pdf) The Office of International & Intercultural Learning has gathered a list of some of the local, regional, and national scholarships available to students studying abroad.
- Feel free to stop by the study abroad resource library for additional assistance in applying these opportunities.
Step 5: Complete a Money Management Worksheet
- “Strategies for Financing Study Abroad ”is a general
worksheet designed for students intending to studying abroad. This
exercise encourages students to increase responsible money management
skills while planning, saving, and spending abroad.
