Fellows

Saint Mary’s College, a Catholic, four-year liberal arts institution for women located approximately 90 miles east of Chicago, has established the Center for Women’s InterCultural Leadership (CWIL) through support of a Lilly Endowment, Inc. grant. The Center for Women’s InterCultural Leadership seeks to increase awareness of the importance of intercultural dialogue in today’s world, to highlight the leadership roles women have adopted in such dialogue, and to foster the next generation of women leaders.

In pursuit of these goals, the Center offers a number of fellowships, which are joint appointments with academic departments. All appointments are for one year with the possibility of a renewal for a second year. CWIL fellows have three general types of responsibilities: 1) research; 2) teaching courses relating to cultural or women’s leadership issues; 3) assisting the Center and/or the department in its programmatic and community activities. The relative weight of these activities will vary depending upon the type of fellowship and the needs of the sponsoring department.

Fellowship Opening 2008-09

The Anthropology Program at Saint Mary's College is seeking a broadly trained anthropologist for a position as a Fellow in the Center for Women's InterCultural Leadership starting in August 2008.  For complete application information (pdf).

The following Research Fellowships are available through CWIL:

Senior Fellows: These scholars' teaching, ideas, and research have made a significant contribution toward the study of the interconnections between gender and culture in the world today. They have at least 10 years experience of scholarship in a field which informs intercultural studies. A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree and demonstrated record of excellence in teaching are required. Senior fellows may be individually invited by departments.

Fellows have a demonstrated interest in intercultural studies and/or women's leadership and have an established research agenda in this regard. A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree, demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, and at least five years of scholarly experience are required.

Postdoctoral Fellows are chosen for their demonstrated interest in the interconnections between gender and culture and their potentiality to develop an appropriate research strategy. This fellowship requires a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree, completed within five years from date of application.

Dissertation Fellows will be selected from ABD applicants in any academic discipline which informs women's intercultural issues. Graduate course work must be completed and a dissertation must be well under way before application.

Annual Fellowships are provided to enable current Saint Mary’s faculty to do research on issues relating to intercultural dialog and/or women’s leadership, or to assist CWIL in its programmatic or curricular activities. In essence, Annual Fellows retain their current department rank and salary while they apply for a course reduction that may range from one to four courses (depending upon their proposed activities). CWIL would then provide the funds to hire part-time instructors to cover their regularly scheduled courses. Alternatively, a department could apply for a CWIL Fellow to teach the courses if they relate to the Center’s areas of interest.
