There are three components
present within the knowledge base of the basic elementary education program.
They are the curriculum, instruction and field experience/assessment. The curriculum
includes general studies, content studies, pedagogical and professional studies
and integrative studies for initial teacher preparation. Instruction consists
of strategies, approaches, and experiences connected to current research. Assessment
involves continuous self-examination and reflection, a sequentially developed
portfolio process, and formal measurement of academic achievement.
The teacher preparation program is organized into three tiers. Each tier is
connected through the conceptual framework of multicultural education, the
utilization of instructional teams, ongoing field experience/practicum placements,
and incremental teaching portfolios.
As a student in the elementary education major, you are obligated to meet the
college requirement for the advanced writing proficiency in the Education Department.
The guidelines are found in the Advanced Writing Proficiency Handbook and can
be obtained from your advisor in the Education Department.
As an elementary education major, you will develop and submit for evaluation
three portfolios during your course of study. A submission involves making
an oral presentation about the contents of your portfolio to selected professors
and peers.
