There are three components
present within the knowledge base of the basic secondary education program.
They are the curriculum, instruction and field experience/assessment.
The curriculum includes general studies, content studies, pedagogical
and professional studies and integrative studies for initial teacher
preparation. Instruction consists of strategies, approaches, and experiences
connected to current research. Assessment involves continuous self-examination
and reflection, a sequentially developed portfolio process, and formal
measurement of academic achievement.
The teaching preparation program for Secondary Education and Senior High,
Junior High/Middle School is organized into three tiers. Each tier is
linked through the goals of multicultural education, continuous and ongoing
field experience/practicum placements that connect theory and practice,
and incrementally developed teaching portfolios.
A subject major concentration consists of 36 to 52 semester hours (depending
upon your major). The Education Department has two license programs for
students with a subject concentration of 36 to 52 semester hours. They
are Senior High, Junior High/Middle School Standard education license
and/or Secondary education license.
As a person seeking Secondary or Senior High, Junior High/Middle School
licensing you will develop and submit for evaluation three portfolios
during your course of study. A submission involves making an oral presentation
about the contents of your portfolio to selected professors and peers.
