Summer 2006 Grant Recipients

Students

  • Audrey Anweiler – Audrey worked for the Patria Press, a home based business of Florrie Kitchler, in Carmel, Indiana; Ms. Kitchler is the publisher of children’s books with a twelve volume set entitled The Young Patriot Series. One of Audrey’s main projects was to develop and write targeted marketing pieces to 160 schools nationwide. Audrey says that while some of the things asked of her this summer were challenging, they have been enjoyable because she has come to believe in the books.
  • Lindsay Burnside – Lindsay worked with the Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend, Indiana. Lindsay’s internship involved day-to-day car of animals in each animal department (i.e. carnivores, birds, reptiles, hoof stock, small mammals, and primates). She said her goals for this internship were to identify what positions are available in the zoological field and what additional education may be needed for the various positions, to learn more about animal behavior, husbandry, and training, and to help her narrow down and possibly focus her interest in the field.

  • Nora Casey – Nora worked with WNDU in South Bend, Indiana. Nora served as an assistant in the news department at WNDU-TV Channel 16, the local NBC affiliate television station. Her duties were diverse and included going out on location with a camera crew and reporters, working with the news director, working with on-camera news anchors, logging tape, making transcripts, and researching and writing stories.

  • Anne Cusack – Anne worked for the Oaklawn Psychiatric Facility, a facility offering residential and outpatient services to children and adults in the surrounding community, in Elkhart, Indiana. Anne’s learning goals for this internship were to better understand the delivery of mental health services, to better understand the interaction of juvenile justice and child welfare with mental health, to understand the place of residential treatment in the continuum of care, to identify and define professional boundaries in service delivery, and to begin to develop a philosophy of practice.

  • Sarah Didier – Sarah worked for the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. As a summer intern, Sarah’s time was split between the Education Department and the Curatorial Department. When in the Education Department, Sarah assisted with the selection, reproduction, and exhibition of approximately 2,000 archive photos. When in the Curatorial Department, Sarah had the opportunity to learn about the process of acquisition, registration, cataloging, conservation, exhibition, and storage.

  • Lisa Gallagher – Lisa worked with the South Bend Tribune in South Bend, Indiana. She was very excited to have the opportunity to experience how writing and editing work in a real world environment. She worked primarily under the direction of the community news editor. Lisa enjoyed developing story ideas, researching those stories, interviewing members of the community, and being challenged everyday to meet publication deadlines.

  • Samantha Leonard – Sam worked with the Gary Rail Cats in Gary, Indiana. During her internship, Sam experienced every aspect of the operations and marketing departments required to run a professional sports team. She spent time in each of the following areas: box office operations, community relations, marketing and promotions, merchandise operations, stadium operations, and group sales. Her biggest hope for the internship was to gain the needed experience to realize her goal of a full-time job in sports marketing/sports management after graduation.

  • Rachel Trinkley – Rachel worked with the Indianapolis Museum of Art . Rachel is a 2006 graduate with majors in Art and History. She served as an intern in the Museum’s Education Department. Rachel’s major projects involved developing educational content and programming for the opening of the Asian Gallery Exhibit. She also assisted with research, development, and implementation of programming using podcasting technology to deliver information to Museum visitors.

Faculty

  • Carla Johnson – Professional Writing Specialist and Internship Coordinator, Department of English
    Dr. Johnson was approved for funding in order to continue her work from last summer on developing new internship opportunities for English and other majors and to continue to nurture relationships she began last summer. In addition to fostering partnerships with potential employers, Dr. Johnson will survey students from the department on their attitudes toward internships and their perceived needs and to identify productive ways of interesting students in available internships. In addition, Dr. Johnson had contact with the two students who were also receiving SEL grants and their employer supervisors. They are Lisa Gallagher at the South Bend Tribune in South Bend, Indiana, and Audrey Anweiler at the Patria Press in Carmel, Indiana.
  • Marcia Rickard – Professor of Art
    Dr. Rickard contacted four museums in the Indianapolis area with the goal of establishing a relationship that will lead to future internship locations for the Art majors and a source of expert speakers and museums professionals for classroom presentations. The museums are: the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Connor Prairie Living History Museum, the Eiteljorg Museum of Indian Art, and the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. Dr. Rickard also was in contact with Rachel Trinkley who received an SEL grant for an internship at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
    Dr. Rickard will also contact the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She was also in contact with Sarah Didier who received an SEL grant for her internship at these two institutions.


Summer 2005 Grant Recipients

Students

  • Sarah “Skip” Bacon – Skip worked at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her goal after graduation is to become a certified lay minister and to serve the church in a predominately Spanish speaking parish. St. Anthony Catholic Church provided Skip with a remarkable experience – services are conducted in both English and Spanish.
  • Mary Kathleen Dingeman – Mary Kathleen worked for the Refugee and Immigration Services of South Bend in South Bend, Indiana. Mary Kathleen is very interested in and deeply passionate about the plight of individual refugees and the issues surrounding immigration in general. As stated in her proposal, she is excited to “be the change I want to see in the world.”
  • Stephanie Dolph – Stephanie worked for Lebermuth Company in Mishawaka, Indiana. She worked as a chemistry intern on compounding, flash points, gas chromatography, product testing, and developing material safety information data sheets. Her goal was to gain experience with which to make a decision about what type of chemistry career to pursue.
  • Nicole Marie Gifford – Nicole worked for Lebermuth Company in Bremen, Indiana. At the Lebermuth facility, she worked as an analytical chemistry intern focusing on quality of incoming and outgoing chemicals, oils, and aromatics.
  • Melissa Newland – Melissa worked for Bayer Healthcare in Elkhart, Indiana. Melissa’s biochemistry internship involved helping a Bayer Healthcare research scientist investigate specific areas of diabetic research including increasing the testing accuracy of glucose sensors. She investigated the depth of blood in the coating layer, enzymes, organometallic mediators, and inert ingredients.
  • Kelly O’Connor – Kelly worked in the Office of Senator Richard Lugar in Indianapolis, Indiana. During her internship she rotated to different departments for a varied experience in immigration/naturalization, Medicare/social security, state and local issues, veteran’s issues, and tax regulations.
  • Maricarol Williams – Maricarol worked for Pacers Sports & Entertainment in Indianapolis, Indiana. During her internship she worked for the Community Relations Department of the WNBA. Maricarol's duties involved organization and administration of seven community relations programs: Mind Body Spirit, Read to Achieve, Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA, Grassroots Basketball Development, Fever Fund of the Pacers Foundation, Players in the Comuunity, and the Fever Advisory Team.
  • Taylor Williams – Taylor worked at The 2520 Gallery, Jonquil Design Associates in Knox, Indiana. Taylor served as an intern for the 2520 Gallery and is a creative and talented young artist in her own right. Her duties involve planning, promoting, and staffing events and exhibits at the gallery. She also learned more about the economics of managing an art gallery.

Faculty

  • Deborah McCarthy – Chair, Department of Chemistry and Physics
    Dr. McCarthy’s project involved periodic communication with three chemistry majors, Stephanie Dolph, Nicole Marie Gifford, and Melissa Newland, who also received Summer Experiential Learning grants. She will also build upon the grant activities she started last year and continue to contact employers who have the potential to work with our students as interns or to hire graduates from the Chemistry/Physics Department.
  • Carla Johnson – Professional Writing Specialist and Internship Coordinator, Department of English
    Dr. Johnson used her time during the summer to renew relationships with past employers of her students and to create new contacts in the South Bend, Fort Wayne, and Indianapolis areas.
  • Maria Melendez – Director of the Writing Proficiency Program and Assistant Professor, Department of English
    Professor Melendez proposed to develop partnerships with the Writers’ Center of Indiana and the Indiana Arts Commission. The goal of these partnerships was to create a minimum of four internships for Saint Mary’s students in the departments of art, business administration and economics, communications, information systems, education, English, humanistic studies, and modern language.

Post Baccalaureate Fellowship

  • St Jospeh County Minority Health Coalition (South Bend, Indiana) and Elia Sanchez. Elia graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. A post baccalaureate fellowship grant was awarded to St. Joseph County Minority Coalition for creating a fulltime position for Elia. In her position as a Community Liaison, she will deliver educational information and intervention initiatives to the underserved minorities in St. Joseph County. Elia’s work focuses on reducing tobacco use among this population.

Professor McCarthy's project involves supervision of the intern Aubrey Szany at Bayer Corporation in Elkhart, Indiana and development of similar internship opportunities in other companies in the local and regional area.

  • Professor Patricia Hancock - Department of Social Work

Professor Hancock's project involves supervision of the intern Marguerite Ritchey and working collaboratively with several local service agencies including the CASIE Center, Foster Parent Licensing for St. Joseph County and Community Connections at CWIL.
